- Most UK “online PhDs” are research degrees with remote supervision, not self-paced courses.
- Professional doctorates (DBA, EdD, DProf) are part-time and usually mix online study with a work-based project.
- A PhD by publication converts existing published work into a doctorate, but eligibility is strict. Campus expectations vary: some routes need none, while others need short residencies (from a few days to several weeks a year) or an in-person viva. Always ask before applying.
- Confirm that the university is officially recognized on GOV.UK before you pay any fee.

Important Note:
💡 Short residencies are common:Many UK professional doctorates and some research programmes ask for short on-campus periods, such as study weekends, a five-day annual school or a block of residential weeks. Sheffield’s EdD has study weekends, Derby’s DBA has five short study blocks, Liverpool’s executive DBA has four residencies, and Cranfield’s executive DBA needs at least eight residential weeks. Some are now run online, such as Bath’s summer and winter schools. Check the residency pattern, and the travel and visa costs, before you apply.

Can You Study for an Online PhD in the UK?
Yes, but the online doctoral programs in the UK are not the same as in the USA. And work differently. In the UK three online doctoral program exists:
- PhD by distance learning. A research degree with remote supervision, electronic progress reviews, and a final viva. Leicester, Portsmouth, Reading, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, UCL and York all describe distance routes (see the university table below).
- Structured part-time doctorates. These are Professional Doctorates Online taught modules followed by a research project; some of the programs require short residencies. Examples are Lancaster’s PhD in Public Health, the Henley DBA and the UWTSD Doctorate in Professional Practice.
- PhD by publication. This is the fastest route available in the UK, that can be finished under one year with all perfect circumstances. In PhD by Published work, it is necessary that you are a experienced researcher with existing published work. Portsmouth, York St John and Hull describe distance options.
A UK distance PhD is supervised research, not a self-paced online course. Reading says so plainly in its own guidance and accepts distance candidates only with academic or financial reasons. Approval depends on your subject, a supervisor with capacity and a project you can complete remotely.

Which Online Doctorate Route in the UK Is Right for You?
This is a very important question and understanding of this also factor is also important. Here are some points that can clarify and help you in choosing the doctorate that matches your career and academic requirements.
ROUTE 1 — Choose a PhD by Research if:
You want to contribute original knowledge to your field, you have clearly defined research questions and supervisor interest, and you are ready for independent, self-directed study over about four to seven years. Your career goal is an academic career or a senior research role.
ROUTE 2 — Choose a Professional Doctorate (DBA, EdD, DProf, etc.) if:
You are a working professional with thorough knowledge and experience of your field, and you want to apply your research to a real organizational or practice problem. You prefer a structured cohort model with taught modules and set milestones, and you want to keep your existing professional obligations while you study.
ROUTE 3 — Choose a PhD by Publication (Published Work) if:
You already have a substantial body of peer-reviewed publications, you hold a degree for the period your university requires (Portsmouth asks for five years), and you want to use your existing contribution instead of conducting new research from scratch.
What Is a PhD by Prior Publication (Published Work) in the UK?
PhD by publication (also called PhD by published work and searched for as PhD by prior publication) offers to the experienced researchers whose research is already published. In this model, you are asked to submit your publication with a commentary, explaining how it fits together, and then you have to defend it in VIVA. Many UK universities offer this model to external candidates, not just to their own staff or graduates.
| University | Who can apply | Mode | Key rules and figures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portsmouth | Degree held at least five years; existing doctorate holders, including professional doctorates, are not eligible | All PhD by publication routes by distance from October 2026 | Submit published work 6–12 months after registering; commentary 5,000–10,000 words; viva; 2026–27 fee £5,238 for external candidates (staff £2,100), which may rise annually |
| Westminster | Staff and outside applicants welcome | Part-time | Commentary up to 15,000 words; work from the last ten years (stated on school course listings); 12–24 months to complete, maximum two years |
| Hull | Staff, alumni and external applicants | Part-time; distance learning possible | Initial assessment of your work (up to three examples of published work) before formal admission; see the university regulations (PDF) |
| Warwick Medical School | Individuals with a PhD-standard portfolio of health-related published research | Not stated on the course page | An academic adviser guides a covering document that links the publications; two academic references; contact the school for current entry rules |
Not every university accepts outsiders. Staffordshire reserves its PhD by Published Work route for internal applicants, and Essex describes its route for current staff.
Contact the university’s doctoral admissions team before applying, and ask whether your publications meet its age limit (Westminster excludes work older than ten years). Confirm that a supervisor with capacity covers your area.
Important note for all PhD by published work routes:
The submission window (6–12 months) refers only to the formal examination period after registration, not the time it takes to produce the underlying research. Candidates are expected to arrive with a substantial, already-published body of peer-reviewed work. This route formalizes existing research achievement; it does not fast-track the production of new research.
How Do You Check Doctoral Programs Accreditation in UK?
Accreditation, one of the most important and crucial factors, ensuring that the degree you are going to earn is recognized and accepted by employers and other educational institutions. In the UK, the accreditation check lot depends on where the university is:
- England: look the provider up on the Office for Students Register.
- Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland: use the official lists of recognized bodies on the GOV.UK degree-recognition page.
- Check who awards the degree. Some courses are taught by one provider and awarded by another; GOV.UK advises confirming the awarding institution.
| Body | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Recognised bodies (OfS Register and GOV.UK lists) | Official lists to check that an institution can legally award UK degrees |
| QAA | Independent quality body for UK higher education, funded by member universities. It does not award degrees. It stopped carrying out quality reviews for the OfS in England in March 2023 |
| AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS | Business school and DBA accreditation. AACSB says about 6% of institutions offering business degrees worldwide hold its accreditation |
| HCPC | Regulates practitioner psychologists and allied health professions |
| NMC | Regulates nursing and midwifery |
| BPS | Accredits psychology programmes |
Important Note:
When a business school is described as “Triple Crown”, it holds AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS at the same time. Liverpool Management School states that it holds all three. Check any other school on the accreditors’ own directories.
The word “university” in a name is not proof. Search the exact legal name on the official register before you pay a fee.
Save a screenshot of the register entry with the date, and confirm professional accreditation (such as AACSB) on the accreditor’s own directory.

Subject lists change, and distance approval depends on supervisor capacity. Check the department page for your subject.
Editorial Note:
Program availability, supervisor capacity and fees change regularly. Confirm current availability with the university’s doctoral college before you apply. Compare by field on our By Subject hub.
Can You Do an Online PhD in England, Scotland or Wales?
Yes. Many accredited universities are offering online PhD programs in England and Scotland: Leicester, Portsmouth, Reading, York, UCL, the University of West London, the Open University and others offer distance PhDs in England, and Edinburgh and Aberdeen do the same in Scotland. Wales currently offers online professional doctorates (UWTSD and Aberystwyth) rather than a verified distance PhD. Rules, fees and campus expectations are set by each university, not by the nation:
- England: online PhD programs at Leicester, Portsmouth, Reading, York, Lancaster, UCL, Birkbeck, the Open University and the University of West London, plus PhD by published work at Westminster and Hull
- Scotland: Edinburgh and Aberdeen
- Wales: University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) and Aberystwyth (online and blended professional doctorates, not research PhDs)
- Northern Ireland: we have not yet verified a distance doctorate there, so it is not listed.
If you search for an online PhD in England, check the specific university’s fee page and supervisor availability. They matter more than the country.
Online PhD Programs in England, Including London
UCL runs a distance learning route within its Education MPhil/PhD, with online supervision and online research training. The University of Westminster accepts external applicants for its PhD by Published Work, and Birkbeck offers some research Programs by distance learning, with supervision by phone or virtual meetings. Elsewhere in England, Leicester, Portsmouth, Reading, York, Lancaster, the Open University and the University of West London all describe distance or online routes (see the table above).
Are Online PhD places in London available?
Funded places follow the same rules as elsewhere in the UK: most UKRI studentships are full-time and campus-based (see the funding section). If you are an international student on a London distance route, you may need to attend periodic in-person components, so budget for travel and living costs. Discover options on our Scholarships and Funding hub.
Online PhD in Scotland: Edinburgh and Aberdeen
Edinburgh’s School of History, Classics and Archaeology offers a PhD by Distance in History, Economic and Social History, Scottish History, Classics and Archaeology. These distance PhD Programs in Scotland provide the same supervision and support as provided in campus programs. Core training is delivered in hybrid form or recorded, and some on-campus extras, such as tutoring. Applicants are asked to complete extra form, describing their distance-study experience and the risks involved.
Aberdeen has no residency or visa requirement for distance PhDs, though supervisors may require some in-person meetings and distance students do not get a fee reduction.
Ask the school whether any visit is needed before you apply.

The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is one of the most popular doctorates programs in the UK. Online and hybrid executive formats are available, and the UK is known for globally accredited business schools.
| University | Format (verified) | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Henley Business School (University of Reading) | Part-time, two stages; five compulsory modules in stage one, completed within the first 18 months; Henley UK and Henley Africa campuses | 4–6 years | Henley states triple accreditation (AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS); AMBA re-accredited its MBA and DBA in 2024 |
| University of Derby | Part-time; five short on-campus study blocks in the first two years, then an independent project with tutorials online, by phone or in person | 4–6 years | £28,200 for the full course in 2026/27, the same for UK and international students (fees normally rise with inflation); practitioner project thesis of 50,000–60,000 words; not eligible for a Student visa |
| University of Liverpool Management School — Executive DBA | Hybrid, part-time: two years of online learning sessions plus four weekend residencies in Liverpool; most activities can be joined remotely if you cannot travel | 4.5–7.5 years | The school states triple accreditation: AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS |
| Liverpool John Moores University — DBA | Part-time, blended; four five-day residential workshops at Liverpool Business School in years 1–3; monthly virtual action learning sets; supervision by distance learning | Typically 4 years, maximum 7 | AACSB membership is listed, which is not the same as accreditation (LJMU says so itself) |
| Warwick Business School — DBA | Part-time; in-person workshops at Warwick and The Shard, London (four 3-day workshops in year 1, three in year 2, one in each of years 3 and 4) | Minimum 4 years, up to 7 (average 4–5) | £97,500 in total for UK and international students, as shown on the Warwick Business School page for the October 2027 start; this is not an online DBA |
Strong accreditation does not mean online delivery. Warwick’s DBA relies on in-person workshops, Liverpool’s executive DBA includes four residencies, Cranfield’s Executive DBA requires every residential week on campus (at least eight), and Durham’s Global DBA is delivered across global locations. Count travel time and cost before you apply.
AACSB accreditation is held by less than 6% of business schools worldwide, according to AACSB. Confirm accreditation on the AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS directories themselves, not only on the school’s site
Choose by format first, then accreditation, then total cost. Compare each Program page before you apply. For more Business Administration Options also: Online DBA Programs (Business hub), Online DBA without Dissertation, Fastest DBA and Cheapest DBA.
Can You Do an EdD or a PhD in Education Online in the UK?
Are you a working educator, and searching for an easily accessible doctorate in Education, then the UK can be a most suited option for you.
Most of the Online EdD Programs in the UK are structured around part-time study from the outset, so you can keep working. EdD Programs are designed for teachers, school leaders and education managers, which makes them an attractive alternative to a traditional PhD by research.
| University | Program | Format (verified) | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Sheffield | EdD, distance learning | Part-time; Part I is two years of taught research training, Part II is independent research; study weekends in Sheffield | Part I 2 years plus Part II 2–4 years; 2026 applications closed, October 2027 entry open |
| University of Bath | EdD | Part-time distance learning; units through summer and winter schools, currently run online; about five days of skills training a year; you pay your own travel if you visit Bath or sit the viva there | Most students take 7 years |
| UCL Institute of Education | Education MPhil/PhD, distance route | No residency requirement; the first two part-time years are online research-methods modules; the viva can be in person or online | 3 years full-time registration; see the page for part-time |
| UWE Bristol | EdD (International) | Taught Part 1, then Part 2 research and thesis undertaken part-time by flexible distance learning | See course page |
| University of Stirling | EdD | Part-time or full-time; mostly online with some optional face-to-face sessions; international students on a Student Visa cannot apply for the part-time or online mode | Part-time 60–96 months; full-time 36–60 months |
| UWTSD (Wales) | Doctorate in Education (EdD) | Part-time; blended taught phase; Part 2 is a 60,000-word work-based project and viva that can be completed by distance learning | Up to 8 years |
| Aberystwyth (Wales) | National EdD | Part-time blended learning; entry needs the National MA Education (Wales) or an equivalent Master’s | Up to 6 years |
| UEA | EdD | Part-time; in-person study blocks; supervision and viva may be online or face-to-face; recruits every two years | 5 years |
Is an EdD or a PhD better?
The best route is the one that serves your career, not one that is universally better. An EdD is designed for working educators who want a structured, cohort-based format with clear annual milestones, taught modules and research tied to professional practice. It suits careers as a school leader, curriculum designer or education policy professional. A PhD in Education is designed for academic or research careers, such as university lectureships or research fellowships. Neither is more prestigious; they serve different purposes.
The UCL EdD itself is campus-based in Bloomsbury, part-time, has run since 1996, and asks for four years’ relevant experience and normally a Master’s. Its distance route is the Education MPhil/PhD above.

Can You Do a Psychology Doctorate Online in the UK?
Psychology is one of the most searched doctoral subjects in the UK, and it helps to know how UK psychology doctorates are structured, because what is available often differs from what people expect.
Research PhDs in psychology cover cognitive, social, developmental, health, educational and organizational psychology, and some accredited UK universities offer them by distance or part-time, subject to supervisor availability in your area. The Open University lists psychology and counselling research degrees; distance availability depends on the research area, so ask before applying.
Clinical psychology is a different matter entirely. A doctorate in clinical psychology (DClinPsy) is a full-time, campus-based, NHS-linked Program in the UK. British Psychological Society accreditation and HCPC approval require supervised clinical placements with direct patient contact that cannot be done remotely. This is a regulatory requirement, not a policy choice that any university can change. If you are an international student, you must be eligible to work in the NHS and be based in the UK for the full three years of training.
On PsyD Programs: the title PsyD is mainly American. In the UK the clinical route is the DClinPsy, so check that any provider using the PsyD title is a recognized body (see the accreditation section).
| University | Verified facts |
|---|---|
| Liverpool | Three-year full-time Program accredited by the British Psychological Society; applications only through the Clearing House |
| Exeter | Three years full-time; requires Graduate Basis for Chartership, a first or 2:1 psychology degree and at least a year of clinically relevant experience |
| Sheffield | No part-time option; trainees have dual student and NHS employee status |
| Birmingham | Three years full-time; leads to HCPC registration; apply through the Clearing House in Leeds |
| Manchester | 36 months full-time; NHS-funded trainees are employed by an NHS trust |
Applications for clinical psychology doctorates go through the Clearing House for Postgraduate Courses in Clinical Psychology, not directly to universities. Programs are three-year, full-time and placement-based, and most places are NHS-funded. A distance clinical psychology PhD is not currently an option.
Forensic psychology follows a different route. The British Psychological Society’s Qualification in Forensic Psychology (Stage 2) is a doctoral-level qualification that leads to eligibility for HCPC registration and chartered membership. Some universities offer doctorates instead, such as Nottingham’s top-up, which asks for a BPS-accredited Master’s at 60% or above and at least 75 days of supervised forensic experience. These routes involve supervised practice, so none is a distance route. Health psychology follows a similar placement-based model: Stirling’s Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology is delivered on campus, with two years of supervised placement.
Non-clinical psychology research PhDs by distance depend on supervisor capacity. A verified list of psychology-specific distance PhDs is not available, so none is named here. Ask the departments at the universities in the distance table.

Can You Study a Nursing or Health Doctorate Online in the UK?
The DNP title is not used in the UK. Nursing and health doctorates are usually a PhD or a professional doctorate such as a DProf, DHealth or Doctorate in Nursing. Desk-based topics such as care delivery, public health policy and health services are the easiest to supervise remotely.
| University | Program | Format (verified) |
|---|---|---|
| University of Bath | Doctor of Health (DHealth) | Part-time distance learning; web-based delivery with an online summer school once a year; most students take 5 years |
| Keele University | Doctorate in Nursing (DNursing) | Online; up to 6 years part-time; Part 1 taught by distance learning; 2026/27 applications closed, reopening April 2027 |
| University of Bolton / Greater Manchester | Professional Doctorate in Health and Social Care (Online) | Part-time distance learning with asynchronous resources and live online workshops and supervision; the page says it is not currently taking online applications, so contact admissions |
A doctorate does not give you professional registration. Check NMC or HCPC rules with the regulator if your career depends on them.
Can You Do an Online PhD in Computing or IT in the UK?
Computing doctorates are among the easiest to supervise remotely, because the research is often data-driven or software-based and needs no laboratory. Availability still depends on the department and your topic.
| University | Program | Format (verified) |
|---|---|---|
| Birmingham City University | Computing Research Degrees, PhD | Full-time, part-time or distance learning; part-time students typically take 4–7 years; 2026/27 UK fee £5,238 full-time or £2,619 part-time |
| University of Gloucestershire | PhD Computer Science | Distance learning option; October 2026 start; listed fees £5,350 (UK) and £13,425 (international) |
| University of York | PhD Computer Science | Listed among its distance-learning PhD subjects; check the department page for visits |
| Portsmouth | Distance Learning PhD | Proposal must show the project can be done remotely |
For technology in education, see Lancaster’s PhD in E-Research and Technology Enhanced Learning in the professional doctorate table above.
Is There a Fully Online Doctorate in Criminal Justice in the UK?
Criminal justice and criminology are among the more popular subjects for distance doctorates in the UK. Research in this field is usually desk-based, data-driven or policy-focused, so many institutions offer distance supervision. Research areas commonly cover policing and surveillance, victimology, offender rehabilitation, hate crime, security studies, terrorism and forensic psychology within the criminal justice system.
| University | Program | Format (verified) |
|---|---|---|
| University of West London | PhD Criminology (online) | Research PhD that can be done entirely online, including the viva; a Master’s with Merit or equivalent research experience is expected |
| Teesside University | Doctorate in Criminal Justice (Online) | 100% online and full-time only; not available part-time; you should work, volunteer or research in criminal justice or an allied field |
| University of Central Lancashire | Professional Doctorate in Criminal Justice (DProf) | Online learning; 3 years; the page lists online part-time fees of £2,625 a year, and a later figure of £2,755 a year, so check the intake year |
| Portsmouth | Professional Doctorate in Criminal Justice (DCrimJ) | Structured 4-year Program with workshops and an online learning environment; for professionals working in criminal justice |
Criminal justice is one of the few UK subject areas with genuine online doctorates. The University of West London’s PhD in Criminology can be completed entirely online, and Teesside’s Doctorate in Criminal Justice is delivered completely online (full-time only), so both suit international students who cannot attend any UK residencies. Leicester also supervises criminology research; ask the department whether distance study is possible for your topic.
1-Year Online PhD Possible in the UK?
If you are searching for 1-Year Online PhD Programs in the UK, and want to start from scratch then, in our research we do not find any accredited program. Full-time research PhDs are registered over three years at UCL, Reading and Aberdeen. The only route that can take around a year is a PhD by publication, because you submit work that already exists. Portsmouth says to submit published work six to twelve months after registering, Westminster allows up to two years, and York St John offers a distance option.
Be cautious of any “1-year research PhD” that starts from nothing. The six-to-twelve-month window covers examining work you have already published, not producing new research.
Accelerated Options for Research PhDs in the UK
There are no shortcuts. Universities set minimum registration periods for research PhDs, and the typical timeline is about three years full-time, or roughly four to eight years part-time (Leicester allows up to seven, and the Open University 48 to 96 months). If you see a claim of a “1-year research PhD” from a UK university, scrutinize its accreditation and recognition status.
Fastest Professional Doctorates in the UK
Structured professional doctorates take about three years at the shortest, for example UCLan’s 3-year online criminal justice DProf and Teesside’s 36-month full-time online Doctorate in Criminal Justice. Most others run four years or more.
Fastest Option: PhD by Published Work in the UK
This is the genuine fastest route, because it can be examined within 6–12 months of registering. It is only open to candidates who already have a substantial body of peer-reviewed published research. The timeline covers examination of existing work, not production of new research.
| University | Route | Minimum duration | Format (verified) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portsmouth | PhD by publication | Submit 6–12 months after registering | Distance from October 2026 |
| York St John | PhD by published work | See course page | Distance; no campus attendance expected |
| Westminster | PhD by published work | Maximum two years | Part-time; work from the last ten years only |
| UCLan | Criminal Justice DProf | 3 years | Online learning |
| Teesside | Doctorate in Criminal Justice (Online) | 36 months full-time | 100% online, full-time only |
| Lancaster | PhD in E-Research and Technology Enhanced Learning | Minimum 4 years | Online modules plus residential teaching |

How Much Does an Online PhD in the UK Cost?
or UK (home) students, the standard research fee follows the UKRI minimum fee, which is £5,238 a year full-time for 2026/27. The matching part-time rate is £2,619 a year at Reading, Portsmouth and Birmingham City. As an illustration only, six years at £2,619 comes to about £15,700 in tuition. International fees are set by each university and rise every year.
| University | Program | Verified fee (2026/27 unless stated) |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | PhD by Distance | Home: £5,238 full-time, £2,619 part-time. International Band 1: £21,750 full-time, £10,900 part-time. Band 2: £24,450 full-time, £12,250 part-time. Per year |
| Portsmouth | PhD, including distance learning | UK: £5,238 full-time, £2,619 part-time. International: £19,950 full-time, £9,975 part-time. Same fees for the distance versions; may rise annually |
| Birmingham City University | Computing PhD (distance option) | UK: £5,238 full-time, £2,619 part-time |
| Gloucestershire | PhD Computer Science (distance option) | £5,350 UK, £13,425 international (October 2026 start) |
| York St John | PhD by Published Work | £2,619 UK, £14,900 international, as listed on the course page for 2026–27 (confirm before applying) |
| Derby | DBA | £28,200 for the full course, the same for UK and international students |
| Warwick Business School | DBA | £97,500 in total, UK and international, over 4 years part-time |
Three questions to ask before comparing Doctoral Programs costs in UK:
- Is the fee quoted per year or as a total Program cost?
- Is this the Home/UK rate or the international rate?
- Does the fee include examination fees and any mandatory residential components?
Fees are only part of the cost. Add travel, any visits, the viva and any visa costs.
Aberdeen says distance students do not get a fee reduction, so ask every university whether distance study changes the fee.
Fees are the 2026/27 figures shown on each official page on 16 October 2026 unless stated. They change every year, so confirm them with the university before you apply.
Can You Get an Online UK Doctorate Without a Dissertation?
Every UK doctorate ends with a thesis or portfolio and an oral examination, so a true no-dissertation doctorate does not exist in the UK. Professional doctorates come closest: taught modules count towards the award, and the written project is shorter. Keele states that its professional doctorate thesis is smaller because Part 1 assessments produce much of the written work.
| University | Program | How the written element works (verified) |
|---|---|---|
| Keele | Doctorate in Nursing (online) | Part 1 is taught by distance learning; Part 2 is the research study and a smaller thesis, examined by viva |
| UWTSD | Doctorate in Professional Practice (online) | Taught Part 1, then a work-based project written up as a 60,000-word thesis |
| Derby | DBA | Taught study blocks, then a practitioner project written up as a 50,000–60,000-word thesis |
| UCL Institute of Education | EdD (campus-based) | Taught modules, then an Institution Focused Study in years two and three, then the thesis |
| Lancaster | PhD in E-Research and Technology Enhanced Learning | Two years of structured modules, then a thesis of up to 50,000 words |
Be wary of any UK provider that promises a doctorate with no research project at all. Check who awards the degree on the GOV.UK recognised-bodies page.
See our No Dissertation hub and its subject pages: DBA, EdD, Criminal Justice, PsyD, IT and DNP.
Can You Get a Funded or Scholarship-Backed Online PhD in the UK?
Fully funded doctorates in the UK are mostly full-time and campus-based, but a few distance places exist. UKRI sets the minimum stipend at £21,805 a year from 1 October 2026 (£20,780 before that), or £23,805 with London weighting, and the minimum fee at £5,238 for 2026/27. You cannot apply to UKRI directly; you apply to the university offering the studentship. UKRI contributes fees only up to the home rate and does not pay for visas or the immigration health surcharge.
- A funded distance PhD that exists: Open University Business and Law. Its PhD by Distance Learning offered funded places for a February 2027 start. Full-time UK-resident UK citizens receive tuition fees plus a stipend of about £20,780 a year for 36 months. Full-time distance students living overseas receive tuition fees only. Part-time study is not funded, and there is no mandatory on-campus attendance after induction (induction is in person for UK-based students). The June 2026 deadline has passed, so watch for the next call
- Employer sponsorship is the usual route for DBA, EdD and DProf candidates, where employers fund staff in exchange for research that benefits the organization. Confirm what your employer will fund before you apply.
- Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for full-time study in the UK by applicants from least developed and vulnerable Commonwealth states, so they are not for distance study.
- Commonwealth Split-site PhD Scholarships, which fund up to 12 months in the UK alongside home-country doctoral study, were under review and not running in 2026 according to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.
- Fully funded PhDs in management: most management and business PhD studentships are campus-based, so employer sponsorship for a DBA or DProf is the most realistic route for distance learners.
- Clinicians: Manchester’s clinical PhD page lists NIHR, MRC, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and 4WardNorth schemes. These support campus-based clinical research rather than distance study.
Aberdeen says distance students do not receive a fee reduction, and funded studentships often exclude visas and the health surcharge. Budget for both.
PhD Scholarships and Grants for PhD Students in UK
Beyond studentships, several scholarship and fellowship routes are worth knowing about:
- University-specific doctoral awards: most UK universities advertise competitive scholarships on their doctoral college or graduate school funding pages. Searching “[university name] doctoral scholarship” is the most reliable way to find one that matches your subject and fee status.
- Research funders: large funders such as Wellcome, the Leverhulme Trust and the British Academy mostly fund projects and researchers after their PhD. Leverhulme’s doctoral scholarships are awarded to universities, not to individual applicants, and its Study Abroad Studentships are for UK-resident students and fund 12–24 months overseas. Check each scheme’s rules before relying on it for PhD fees.
For International PhD Students
- Country-specific government scholarships: check whether your own government’s scholarship covers distance or part-time study before you rely on it.
- DBA scholarships: for DBA candidates, employer co-funding and professional body bursaries are the most practical routes. A small number of business schools offer merit-based DBA scholarships directly, so check with each school’s admissions team.
Funding schemes open and close each year. Confirm deadlines and eligibility on the funder’s page.
What Are the Admission Requirements for an Online PhD in the UK?
How to Apply — Step by Step
Step 1 — Identify your research area and potential supervisor.
For a PhD by research, finding a supervisor with capacity in your specific area is the critical first step. Most UK universities ask you to contact potential supervisors directly before you submit a formal application. Use the university’s staff research pages and departmental research group listings, or contact the doctoral admissions office, to find a supervisor in your area.
Step 2 — Check Program-Specific Requirements.
The entry requirements for doctoral programs in UK vary significantly as every university has its own requirements, as well sometimes programs have its own specific requirements, factor like delivery mode and subject also have different requirements. It is highly suggested that you should confirm specific requirements and criteria before preparing your documents.
Step 3 — Prepare your Research Proposal.
For a PhD by research, a proposal is usually required, covering your research question, proposed methodology, significance, and relevant literature. Length varies: for example, the Open University’s Business and Law PhD asks for 1,000–2,000 words. For professional doctorates (DBA, EdD), a shorter outline of your intended research focus is usually enough at the application stage.
Step 4 — Gather Supporting Documents
Standard requirements across most UK PhD Programs:
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates (with certified English translations if applicable)
- CV or résumé summarizing education, research experience and relevant employment
- Two academic or professional references
- Personal statement or statement of purpose
- English language certificate (international students — see below)
- Writing sample (required by some departments, particularly in humanities)
Step 5 — Submit Your Application
Most UK universities use online application portals. Many Programs accept self-funded applicants on a rolling basis, but deadlines vary a lot. The Open University’s funded February 2027 call closed on 9 June 2026, and Exeter’s clinical psychology applications through the Clearing House closed on 19 November for a September 2026 start. Check each deadline carefully.
Step 6 — Interview
Not every UK PhD application involves an interview, but competitive or funded places commonly do. Interviews are often online. The Open University, for example, interviews by Microsoft Teams, with a 10-minute presentation followed by up to 45 minutes of questions.
Academic Qualifications
A strong 2:1 or a relevant Master’s degree is the usual baseline. The Open University asks for a 2:1 or a specialist Master’s with a strong research element, and Aberdeen asks for at least a 2:1. Professional doctorates add experience requirements: UCL’s EdD asks for at least four years’ relevant professional experience and normally a Master’s, and Derby’s DBA asks for a Master’s plus at least three years’ professional experience.
English Language Requirements (International Students)
Requirements differ by university and Program, so always check the exact score on your offer:
- Reading says most PhD Programs need IELTS 6.5 overall, and some need 7.0.
- The Open University asks for IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each skill if you need a secure English test. Nationality or a degree from a majority English-speaking country can also count as proof.
- Portsmouth and the University of West London ask for IELTS 6.5 with no component below 6.0.
- Derby’s DBA asks for IELTS 6.5 with no skill below 5.5, and Stirling’s Health Psychology doctorate asks for 7.0 with 6.5 in each skill.
Non-UK citizens on the Open University’s distance PhD cannot use those studies to apply for a UK visa. Derby’s DBA applicants are not eligible for a Student visa, and Stirling’s EdD does not accept Student Visa applicants for its part-time or online mode. Confirm visa rules in writing before you pay fees.
These requirements are a general framework checked against official university pages in October 2026. Individual universities, departments and funders set their own thresholds, and funded places can differ from self-funded routes. Confirm the specific criteria with the university’s doctoral admissions team before you prepare your application. Best Online Doctoral Programs is an independent comparison resource and does not process applications.
How Does the UK Compare with Other Countries for Online Doctorates?
If you want to compare UK distance PhD options with other countries, the key differences are:
- UK research doctorates are registered over three years full-time (UCL, Reading and Aberdeen all state this), while most distance routes are part-time. Portsmouth plans six years.
- Professional doctorates (DBA, EdD, DProf) are mostly part-time and combine taught modules with a shorter written project.
- UK degrees can only be awarded by recognized bodies. Check the Office for Students Register in England, or the GOV.UK lists for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Below are some other countries offering online doctoral Programs:
| Country | Example universities | Program / format | Key notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | Capitol Technology University, Fielding Graduate University | Online / hybrid research doctorates | Check regional accreditation — it is a higher standard than national accreditation in the US context |
| Australia | University of Southern Queensland (USQ) | Distance PhD / hybrid | Public university; strong distance research provision; international pricing applies |
| Germany | FernUniversität in Hagen | Distance doctorates (select fields) | Low public tuition; Programs primarily in German; research-intensive |
| Canada | Athabasca University | DBA / EdD, hybrid or fully online | Well-established distance specialist; internationally recognised |
Frequently Asked Questions :
Q1: Are UK distance PhD Programs recognised internationally?
A UK degree is recognised when an officially recognised body awards it. In England, check the Office for Students Register; for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, use the lists on GOV.UK. Edinburgh says its distance PhD students receive the same supervision and support as on-campus students. For professional accreditation such as AACSB, check the accreditor’s own directory.
Can I study a UK doctorate part-time while working full-time?
Yes. Part-time is the normal format for distance and professional doctorates. Portsmouth plans six years part-time, the Open University allows 48 to 96 months, and UCL expects roughly 12 to 18 hours a week for part-time research.
Q3: Can I do a UK PhD online with no residency?
Some routes need none. Leicester does not require distance students to visit, UCL’s Education distance route has no residency requirement and allows an online or in-person viva, Portsmouth usually needs no campus visits, and the University of West London’s online PhD in Criminology holds supervision, reviews and the viva online. Reading normally holds the viva in Reading, and Aberdeen supervisors may require some in-person meetings.
Q4: Can international students get funding for UK distance doctorates?
Only in limited cases. The Open University’s funded distance PhD places cover tuition only for full-time students living overseas. UKRI pays fees only up to the home rate and does not cover visas, and the Commonwealth Split-site PhD scheme was not running in 2026. Look at employer sponsorship and your own government schemes.
Q5: Is an online PhD from a UK university 100% online?
Sometimes. Portsmouth and Leicester describe distance routes without required campus visits, the University of West London’s online PhD in Criminology runs entirely online, and Teesside’s Doctorate in Criminal Justice is delivered completely online (full-time only). Others need an in-person viva or meetings, such as Reading and Aberdeen. Ask the department before you apply.
Q6: Are there fully funded online PhD Programs in the UK?
Rarely, but some exist. The Open University’s Business and Law PhD by Distance Learning funded full-time places for February 2027: tuition plus about £20,780 a year for 36 months for UK-resident UK citizens, and tuition only for overseas distance students. Most UKRI studentships are campus-based.
Q7: Which UK universities offer genuine distance PhD routes?
Verified routes include Leicester, Portsmouth, Reading, Aberdeen, Edinburgh (History, Classics and Archaeology), UCL (Education), York, the Open University, the University of West London (criminology, online), Birkbeck (selected Programs), Birmingham City (computing), Gloucestershire (computer science) and Lancaster’s structured online PhDs. Availability depends on the department and supervisor capacity.
Q8: What is the difference between a PhD and a professional doctorate?
A PhD ends in a thesis of up to 80,000 words at Leicester or up to 100,000 at UCL. Professional doctorates combine taught modules with an applied project. UWTSD’s DProf ends in a 60,000-word thesis, Derby’s DBA in a 50,000–60,000-word thesis, and Keele’s thesis is smaller because Part 1 assessments carry much of the writing. They suit working professionals who want structure and a cohort.
Q9: What should international students know about a UK distance doctorate?
English requirements vary: Reading says most PhDs need IELTS 6.5 and some need 7.0, while the Open University asks for 6.5 with 6.0 in each skill. On visas, the Open University says non-UK citizens on its distance PhD cannot use it to apply for a UK visa, Aberdeen notes a visitor visa may be needed for visits, and Stirling’s EdD does not accept Student Visa applicants for its part-time or online mode. Clinical psychology doctorates need NHS eligibility and UK-based training.
Q10: What is a postdoctoral fellowship in the UK?
It is a research post held after a PhD, separate from doctoral study, and most are done at the host institution. This page covers doctorates, so use university research vacancy pages for postdoctoral roles.
Q11: Are there paid PhD Programs in the UK for distance students?
Mostly not: paid studentships usually go to full-time campus-based students. The Open University’s Business and Law distance places pay a stipend to eligible UK-resident UK citizens. For professional doctorates, employer sponsorship is the usual route.
Q12: Can I do an online PhD in England?
Yes. Leicester, Portsmouth, Reading, York, Lancaster, UCL, Birkbeck, Birmingham City, Gloucestershire, the University of West London and the Open University all describe distance or online research routes. Fees and rules are set by each university, not by England as a nation.
Q13: What is a PhD by prior publication in the UK?
It is a PhD awarded for research you have already published, submitted with a commentary and defended in a viva. Portsmouth requires a degree held for five years and no existing doctorate, York St John offers a distance option, Westminster accepts external applicants and limits the work to the last ten years, and Hull accepts staff, alumni and external applicants.
Q14: How much does an online PhD in the UK cost?
For UK students, the standard fee follows the UKRI minimum: £5,238 a year full-time and £2,619 part-time in 2026/27. International fees are higher: Reading’s PhD by Distance lists £10,900 to £12,250 a year part-time, and Portsmouth lists £9,975 part-time. Professional doctorates vary: Warwick’s DBA is £97,500 in total, and Derby’s DBA is £28,200.
Q15: Is a 1-year online PhD possible in the UK?
Not from scratch. A PhD by publication can be examined in around a year (Portsmouth asks you to submit 6–12 months after registering), but it needs a body of work you have already published.
