Though 12-months PhD online programs are scarce, and very few accredited one-year doctorate programs are available. Some of these programs are compressed PhDs – offering the researchers the facility to submit their existing published work rather than to start new research. In addition, Professional doctorate programs (like DMSc, DHSc or DNP) that are already shorter than traditional PhD programs offer the opportunity to reduce the completion time to 12 to 18 months by transferring credit or proven professional experience you already have: Transfer Credits from a prior graduate degree or a current professional license. It is important to note that none of these doctorate programs are from scratch with no prior qualifying credentials.
Here at Best Online Doctoral Programs, we offer you to explore the list of1 year PhD programs online and one year doctoral programs online that we verified, including 1 year PhD programs online with no dissertation.
- A research PhD from scratch cannot be completed in 12 months at an accredited institution. 1 year PhD programs online exist only for specific applicants.
- We verified three real routes: PhD by published work (UK, Ireland, Australia), online DMSc and DHSc programs for health professionals, and accelerated post-master’s DNP programs.
- Most 1-year PhD programs online replace the traditional dissertation with a commentary, capstone or scholarly project. None involves zero scholarly work.
- Verified costs run from about £5,006 n the UK (Portsmouth, PhD by publication) to about $32,000 in the USA (Ketchum DMSc tuition). We found no accredited 12-month online PhD that is free.
- Always verify accreditation first at ope.ed.gov, qaa.ac.uk or teqsa.gov.au before you pay any fees.

At a Glance — The 3 Real 12-Month Categories
In our research we, found three Real categories for 12 months online doctoral programs:
- Transfer-Credit Doctorates — Accredited professional doctorates like the DMSc and DNP offering the facility to transfer prior graduate credits making 12 months doctorate possible.
- Post-Professional Doctorates — For professionals who already hold a relevant license (e.g. Physician Assistants), built on existing clinical standing.
- A 12-month registration route – primarily offered by UK, Australian, and some European universities, for researchers with an existing body of peer-reviewed publications
Each category has real eligibility conditions. we discussed each in detail below. Scroll down or use the Table of Contents to find the one that fits your background.
Can I Do a PhD in 1 Year Online?
Short answer: rarely, and only if you already have the work behind you. A research PhD built from scratch cannot realistically be completed in 12 months at an accredited institution
You can earn a doctorate in one year if you meet specific conditions through one of the three accredited categories explained below. Normally traditional PhD or Doctorate degree programs online or on campus start from scratch without any prior publication; credits or professional license usually take 3 to 7 years to complete.
How and where can you find One-Year Doctorate or PhD Online or On-Campus? Below are the three categories and verified institutions.
PhD by Published Work
University of Westminster, Portsmouth, Manchester Metropolitan University (its regulations limit applicants to MMU staff, partner-institution staff and alumni) and University College Cork (Ireland): about 12 months of registration (Westminster 12–24 months; Portsmouth 6–12 months after registering) if you already have a strong peer-reviewed publication record.
How it works: You are not required to do any new research. You submit the research you have already published, add a written commentary that links it into one doctoral-level contribution, and defend it in an oral examination (viva) – See full section below.
Credit-Transfer Doctorates
University of Pittsburgh DMSc (USA): 1 year when you bring the 30 required transfer credits from a prior health-related graduate degree. University of the Pacific DMSc: 12 months with 9 units of advanced standing. Thomas Edison State University DNP: 12 months, with up to 9 doctoral credits transferable.
How it works: the university counts graduate credit you have already earned toward the doctorate, so you complete only the remaining courses and a final project.
Post-professional Doctorate
SIU School of Medicine, Keck Graduate Institute, Marshall B. Ketchum University and Lincoln Memorial University DMSc (USA): about 12 months, but only open to certified Physician Assistants. Francis Marion University DNP: one calendar year for master’s-prepared nurses.
How it works: These programs are designed for practicing clinicians, means your existing license and clinical training count toward the degree. You study online and finish with a scholarly project instead of a dissertation: a practicum plus scholarly
The above-mentioned programs are verified and later on this page you can find eligibility requirements, accreditation authority, and cost. Again, it must be noted that none of the above-mentioned 12 months PhD and Doctorate programs are from scratch.
These routes are not open to everyone. Each has entry conditions: published research for PhD by published work, certified PA status for most DMSc programs, a master’s in nursing for the DNP programs, and, at Pitt, 30 transfer credits from a health-related graduate degree. Check eligibility before you spend time on an application, because none of these programs starts from scratch.
“12 months” is the best-case timeline, not a guarantee. Some programs can run longer (Westminster allows up to 24 months, and the Thomas Edison State DNP has a 24-month option), and start dates matter: Francis Marion admits in the fall, the University of the Pacific starts in January, and Pitt starts in spring or summer. Ask admissions for the exact length and next start date before you plan.
Fastest Doctorate Timeline at a Glance
Do not meet the requirements of these 12 months doctoral programs? There are still some other fastest options available for you to complete your doctoral degree in a realistic tier of 18 months to three years with accelerated professional doctorate programs.

| PhD by Published Work (UK, Ireland) | 6–24 months (registration) | Existing peer-reviewed publications + viva |
| Professional Doctorate by Prior Works (Torrens, Australia) | 12 months | Prior published works; applicants who already hold a doctorate are excluded |
| Transfer-Credit DMSc and DNP (Pitt, University of the Pacific, Thomas Edison State) | 12 months | 30 required transfer credits (Pitt); 9 units of advanced standing (Pacific); up to 9 transferred doctoral credits (Thomas Edison State) |

1 Year PhD Programs Online with No Dissertation — What’s Actually Required
While searching for the “1 year PhD Online” program, most of the prospective candidates also search for 1 year PhD programs online with no dissertation, or one year no dissertation doctorate programs. Now the question is 12 months without dissertation doctorate programs available? The Answer is Yes, almost every verified 12 months accredited doctoral programs mentioned on this page is without traditional dissertation requirements. But also, none of them involve zero scholarly work.
Each replaces the dissertation with a rigorous alternative that still requires original thinking, structured academic writing, and formal examination. Here is exactly what each verified route requires:
A real example: several UK universities list a UK home full-time PhD fee of £5,238 per year for 2026/27, the UKRI minimum fee. Over three years that is £15,714. Australia works differently for its own residents: domestic research students receive a government fee offset (see the Australia section below).
| Route | Dissertation Required? | What You Submit Instead |
|---|---|---|
| PhD by Published Work — UK (University of Westminster, University of Portsmouth), Ireland (University College Cork) | No | Critical commentary (5,000–15,000 words) + existing published works + viva examination |
| Doctorate by VAE — France (Université Côte d’Azur, Université Paris-Saclay; Université Paris-Est Créteil also publishes a procedure) | Not a conventional thesis | VAE dossier of your research experience, or a thesis made of published articles with an introduction, conclusion and bibliography, then an oral defense before a jury |
| Professional Doctorate by Prior Works — Torrens University Australia | No | Thesis units built on your prior published works |
| DMSc for Physician Assistants (Pitt, SIU, Keck Graduate Institute, University of the Pacific, Ketchum) | No | Applied project: practicum plus scholarly project (SIU), capstone (Keck Graduate Institute), doctoral project suitable for publication (Pacific), publishable manuscript (Ketchum) |
| Thomas Edison State University DNP | No | Scholarly immersion project that can be integrated into your current employment |
| Francis Marion University DNP | No | Project development and two-course capstone, with 360+ clinical hours |
| Frontier Nursing University DNP | No | Rapid-cycle quality improvement project (500 clinical hours) |
| ASU DBH | No | Applied quality-improvement project over two courses |
| Professional doctorates generally (EdD, DBA) | Varies | Dissertation-in-practice or applied capstone (some programs, such as the USC EdD, still require a dissertation in practice) |
You must understand that without dissertation does not mean that no scholarly work is required. It just replaces the original research and long thesis with applied projects to solve the professional problem.
Any program claiming no dissertation AND no project, no examination, and no academic oversight of any kind is not an accredited doctoral program. It is a diploma. Always verify at ope.ed.gov (US), qaa.ac.uk (UK), or teqsa.gov.au (Australia) before paying any fees.

PhD by Published Work — The Genuine 12-Month Route for Researchers
PhD by Published work also known as PhD by Publication or Portfolio PhD is one of the most accredited doctoral routes with a registration period of 12 months or less at some universities (up to 24 months at others). However, this one-year PhD model is offered by UK, Irish, Australian and some European universities. We did not find a US or Canadian equivalent.
Key Distinction — Registration Period vs. Research Time
- Registration period: 6–24 months (writing the commentary + examination — the ‘fast’ part).
- Research production: many years of prior peer-reviewed publications
- You cannot register for a PhD by Published Work and then produce the publications. Your body of work must already exist and meet doctoral quality standards before you apply.
When Is PhD by Published Work for You?
- If you are a mid-career academic and researcher with a substantial body of peer-reviewed journals, articles, or chapters.
- Or if you are an industry professional or scientist with extensive publications in recognized professional or technical journals.
- Or you are a practitioner in fields such as architecture, music, fine art or creative industries with proven exhibited or performed significant original work.
- Or you are an academic who has been publishing for years but never have the chance to pursue a traditional PhD formally.
- Or you are a researcher at an established institution or organization that already meets doctoral output standards.
It is not for you if:
- If you graduated recently or in your early professional career and do not have an established publication record.
- IOr if you just want to earn a doctorate fast and quick without any prior published research.
- Or if you are seeking to use your work experience only without any publications as the basis for a doctorate.
- Or you are in search of a coursework-based accelerated option to complete your doctorate – this is not a taught program.

International One Year PhD Programs
2-month PhD and Doctorate Programs are also available outside the USA. Depending on your background, location and research record these international programs might be more viable and easily accessible for you and can prove more affordable and cheaper than the US one year doctorate programs online.
Earlier on this page, we discussed the UK and Irish universities offering One Year PhD by Published work option in detail. To open more options for you we listed some of the other accredited 12-month PhD options offered by universities in different European countries.

One Year PhD in Australia
Several Australian universities recognize prior published work. Torrens University Australia offers a Professional Doctorate (By Prior Works) of eight thesis units over 12 months, with online or face-to-face supervision, and a PhD (By Prior Works) for established researchers. Applicants who already hold a doctorate are excluded, and some Torrens pages describe the flexible options as being for domestic students, so international applicants should confirm eligibility directly. Other universities, such as the University of Tasmania (9–12 months, but for staff or long-term associates only) and Flinders University (qualification held at least three years), have narrower eligibility. Check the institution on the TEQSA register at teqsa.gov.au before applying. More options: Online Doctoral Programs Australia.
One Year PhD in Canada
We did not identify an accredited Canadian university offering a 12-month PhD. Canadian doctorates generally follow a standard dissertation route that takes several years. If speed matters, a published-work route in the UK, Ireland or Australia, or an accelerated professional doctorate, is the realistic alternative. See our Online PhD Canada page for the programs that do exist.
We did not find a hybrid doctorate that finishes in 12 months at an institution that meets our listing criteria. Check residency dates, travel and accommodation costs before you apply.

- You need a credential for career advancement — not a tenure-track academic position.
It May not Be Right for You If:
- You are new to doctoral-level research or academic writing.
- You want a traditional academic career — tenure-track positions almost universally require a research PhD.
- You have no prior publications, transfer credits, or professional license to bring.
- You require full funding — professional doctorates have very limited scholarship availability.
Key Principles:
- Matching your goals to the correct doctoral format matters more than speed alone.
- A 2-year professional doctorate from an accredited institution will serve your career far better than a 1-year degree from an unaccredited source.
- The institutions named on this page are verified — but there are many unverified programs using the same search terms. Always check accreditation first.

Frequently Asked Questions :
Can I get a PhD in one year online?
Rarely. A traditional research PhD from scratch cannot realistically be completed in 12 months at any accredited institution. You can reach a doctorate in about a year through three accredited routes: PhD by Published Work (UK and Irish universities) for researchers with an existing publication record; transfer-credit and post-professional doctorates such as the online DMSc for physician assistants (Pitt, SIU, Keck Graduate Institute, University of the Pacific, Ketchum, Lincoln Memorial); and accelerated post-master’s DNP programs (Thomas Edison State University, Francis Marion University).
Are 1-year PhD programs in the USA accredited?
We did not find a regionally accredited US institution offering a from-scratch research PhD in 12 months. The US options are professional and post-professional doctorates, such as the post-master’s DNP at Thomas Edison State University and Francis Marion University, and the DMSc and DHSc programs for health professionals. Verify accreditation at ope.ed.gov before enrolling.
Can I complete a one-year doctorate without a dissertation?
Yes — the verified 12-month routes replace the traditional dissertation: PhD by Published Work uses existing publications plus a critical commentary; the DMSc programs use a scholarly project, capstone or publishable manuscript; the DNP programs use a scholarly or capstone project. Any program claiming no academic work of any kind is a red flag for a diploma mill.
How much does a fast-track doctoral programs cost?
Thomas Edison State University’s DNP is about $29,000 in tuition (36 credits at $806, plus practicum fees). Capella DNP has a $32,000 tuition cap for eligible learners. Portsmouth’s PhD by publication costs about £5,006 for external candidates in 2025/26. Always request the official fee schedule before budgeting.
Are there one year doctoral programs online?
Yes, for specific applicants. Online options include the Thomas Edison State University DNP (12 months), the Francis Marion University MSN to DNP (one calendar year, full-time), the DMSc programs for PAs at Pitt, SIU, Keck Graduate Institute, the University of the Pacific, Ketchum and Lincoln Memorial, and Torrens University Australia’s Professional Doctorate (By Prior Works). University College Cork’s published-work PhD has a one-year minimum registration. Each has eligibility conditions, so confirm yours with the university.
Are there free 1 year PhD programs online?
We did not find an accredited 12-month online PhD that is genuinely free. Most routes are self-funded. See our fully funded and scholarships pages for funded doctoral options, which usually take longer.
Are there 1 year doctoral programs for physician assistants?
Yes. The online Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) is offered by the University of Pittsburgh and SIU School of Medicine (1 year), Keck Graduate Institute (12 months), Lincoln Memorial University (12 months), the University of the Pacific (12 to 15 months) and Marshall B. Ketchum University (12 months). Each requires PA qualifications, and some have extra conditions, such as Pitt’s 30 transfer credits.
Are there 1 year PhD programs online in the UK?
The UK offers PhD by published work. Westminster requires 12–24 months of part-time registration, and Portsmouth requires you to submit 6–12 months after registering, with distance learning for all PhDs by Publication from October 2026. You need an existing body of peer-reviewed work and, at Portsmouth, a degree held for at least five years and no prior PhD.
Can I finish a PhD in Ireland in one year?
Only through published work at University College Cork, whose PhD by Prior Published Work sets a minimum registration of one year. Applicants need a 2:1 degree and a substantial body of published research, and the committee decides the actual period. Dublin City University’s PhD by publication has the same three-year full-time minimum as its standard PhD and only counts work done during registration.
Is there a 1 year online PhD in Australia?
Torrens University Australia offers a Professional Doctorate (By Prior Works) of eight thesis units over 12 months, with online supervision available. It is based on prior published works, and applicants with an existing doctorate are excluded. Confirm international eligibility with Torrens.
Is there a 1 year online PhD in Canada?
We did not identify an accredited Canadian university offering a 12-month PhD. Canadian doctorates generally follow a standard multi-year dissertation route. See our Canada page for the online programs that do exist.
Is there a 1 year hybrid PhD?
We did not find a hybrid doctorate that completes in 12 months at an institution that meets our listing criteria. The closest are Torrens University Australia’s Professional Doctorate (By Prior Works), which can be delivered online or on campus, and Frontier Nursing University’s DNP, which adds one 3-day campus immersion to online study over 18 months.
Is the Doctor of Behavioral Health at Arizona State University a one-year program?
No. ASU’s clinical DBH is 60 credits in 13 classes of 7.5 weeks, which works out to roughly two years if taken back-to-back. ASU does not publish a fixed completion time, so confirm with admissions.
