Are There Really Online PhD Programs in Germany?
Fully online PhD programs in Germany are rare. Even FernUniversität in Hagen, the country’s state-funded distance university, says it does not offer a "distance doctorate" that differs fundamentally from a doctorate at an on-campus university. It does allow part-time doctorates, and external doctoral candidates must keep regular personal contact with their supervisor and colleagues on site.
However, Many Germany universities offer, different alternatives though not fully online but offer you the flexibility to do a major part of the work from home. Below are the three options for your review:
| Study mode | What it means | Typical options in Germany |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | Most coursework and supervision are done remotely, with little or no travel. | Rare for doctorates in Germany. Closest: UK-partnered DBAs with online courses (FHDW, Steinbeis SIBE). |
| Hybrid / part-time / external | You research alongside a job or from your home base, with regular contact and some visits. | FernUniversität in Hagen, TUM external doctorate, DAAD bi-national (sandwich) route. |
| On-site | You work at the German university or institute. | Most funded research-associate positions and structured programmes. |
Be careful with any website that promises a fully online German PhD in a year. A genuine German doctorate needs an institution with the right to award doctorates and a professor who agrees to supervise you.
Why Choose Germany for an Online or Hybrid PhD?
In Germany you can find accredited combined research focused universities, offering lowest costs as compared to other countries of the world, and international doctoral options. Online PhD Programs in Germany can be the best choice for International Students and working professional:
- Tuition-free public doctorates. DAAD states that tuition is free for doctoral studies for at least the first six semesters at all public universities in Germany. Baden-Württemberg’s €1,500-per-semester fee for non-EU students does not apply to doctoral students.
- Several funding routes. Research jobs, DAAD grants, and structured programs with fellowships.
- Flexible formats. Individual, structured, external, part-time, and bi-national doctorates.
- English-taught options. DAAD’s international program database lists programs taught in English.
How Do Online and Hybrid PhDs Work in Germany?
In Germany, accredited universities offer various doctoral formats. Each format offers a different level of flexibility. By understanding these different formats, you will be in better position to choose the right and most suited route either hybrid or online PhD in Germany that fits with your career, research goals and need for distance learning.
What are individual doctorate programs?
This is the Research PhD route and the one most student choose. You:
- Choose a research topic
- Find a supervisor (a Doktorvater or Doktormutter) who agrees to supervise you
- Research largely independently
- Meet your supervisor regularly, sometimes online if the supervisor agrees
- Submit a dissertation and defend it
It can suit international students who need flexibility, but only if a professor agrees to supervise you and to any remote arrangement.
What are structured PhD programs?
Structured doctoral programs (Graduiertenschulen) work more like US and UK doctorates. They usually include:
- A curriculum, seminars and workshops
- A supervisory committee
- An international research environment
- Often a funded position or fellowship
Many structured programs expect you to work full-time on your thesis on site, so they are less suited to remote study. Some are taught in English.
What is an external doctorate, and can working professionals do one?
In an external doctorate you are employed by a company or a non-university research institution while a German university supervises your dissertation. At TUM, for example, you do your work mainly at your employer but are also part of TUM’s academic environment, and you are generally less involved in the department’s daily work. Rules differ by faculty, so ask before you apply. Non-EU applicants who plan to work in Germany need a work permit.
Can I do a part-time PhD in Germany?
Yes, but this flexibility is offered in some universities. Freie Universität Berlin allows part-time doctorates with the approval of the doctoral committee. TUM offers a part-time doctorate in which you do your research in your free time under a TUM professor, and FernUniversität in Hagen says part-time doctorates are possible.
However, Part-time PhD Programs in Germany, usually takes longer time to complete. FU Berlin notes that many candidates cannot finish in the usual three years because of professional obligations.
What is a bi-national (sandwich or cotutelle) doctorate?
This model is a combination of remote study with German supervision, available for the candidates who already have a PhD place in their home country.
DAAD describes two models:
- Sandwich model: In this model, you start your doctorate at home, make research trips to Germany, and finish at home. Your home university awards the degree, and a German academic adviser also supervises you.
- Cotutelle model: the German and the home university agree a cooperation contract, and both award the doctorate jointly.
DAAD funds between 7 and 24 months of research stays in Germany. See the funding section for amounts and eligibility. Some universities also run joint programs, for example Universität Hamburg and Macquarie University in Australia, and HHU Düsseldorf’s Franco-German Doctoral College (with Aix-Marseille and Tübingen) allows double degrees through co-tutored theses and research stays at the partner university.
Can universities of applied sciences award doctorates in Germany?
Generally, not. The right to award doctorates (Promotionsrecht) traditionally belongs to universities. There are exceptions: Baden-Württemberg’s state-wide Promotionsverband of 24 universities of applied sciences has been able to award doctorates since October 2022, and North Rhine-Westphalia has a doctoral college that works with partner universities. Cooperative doctorates also exist, such as TUM’s joint supervision with universities of applied sciences. Always check which institution awards your degree.
What Is the Difference Between a German Dr. and a PhD?
Most German doctorates award a “Dr.” title tied to the subject, for example Dr. rer. nat. (natural sciences), Dr.-Ing. (engineering), Dr. phil. (humanities) or Dr. rer. publ. (administrative sciences at Speyer). Some universities award the “PhD” title through structured programs. At Freie Universität Berlin, for instance, the PhD title is available to candidates who complete a Dahlem Research School graduate program.
DAAD guidance gives about three to five years as a typical length for an individual doctorate. Part-time routes usually take longer. The PhD title is also awarded at LMU Munich, Universität Hamburg, the University of Freiburg, the University of Göttingen, the University of Cologne and, in medicine, TUM and the University of Bonn. At Humboldt-Universität and Freie Universität Berlin, it is available as an alternative to the Dr. (at FU Berlin’s biology, chemistry and pharmacy department only on request, after a structured program). At HHU Düsseldorf, natural-science candidates can choose between a Dr. rer. nat. and a PhD in Natural Sciences, and Heidelberg’s humanities faculties can also award the PhD title when requirements are met.
What Are the Admission Requirements and Application Steps for a PhD in Germany?
Although for doctoral programs in Germany the admission requirements vary by university and faculty. However, there are some common and general requirements following the same patten.
Admission rules differ by university and faculty, but the process follows a clear pattern. Read the doctoral regulations (Promotionsordnung) of your faculty before you contact anyone.
What are the common requirements?
- A master’s degree or equivalent (some faculties require a relevant master’s)
- A strong research proposal
- CV, academic transcripts and letters of recommendation
- Proof of English or German if the faculty requires it
- Agreement from a supervisor, or acceptance into a structured program
What are the steps?
- Choose your field and shortlist supervisors or programs.
- Contact supervisors with a short proposal and your CV.
- Agree supervision in writing (Betreuungsvereinbarung), including how often you will meet and whether any work can be done remotely.
- Apply for admission as a doctoral candidate. At FU Berlin you can apply at any time once you have a supervisor.
- Apply for funding in parallel (research jobs, DAAD or other grants).
- Enroll if the university requires it. FU Berlin requires doctoral candidates who are not university employees to enroll as students shortly after admission.
- Research, write, submit your dissertation, and defend it. The defence usually takes place at the university, so ask about the arrangements early.
Where can I find supervisors and programs for international students?
- DAAD international programmes database (programs taught in English)
- DFG Research Training Groups (structured programs)
- HRK Hochschulkompass doctoral search (doctoral opportunities at state and state-recognised universities)
Does Master’s Degree from International Institution is acceptable for Online PhD in Germany Programs?
Master’s degree issued by an international institution that is accredited and recognized in the respective country of issue, do not need formal recognition in Germany. To check how a foreign university or degree is rated, use anabin, the database kept by the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB). A university rated "H+" is recognized in Germany. If your degree is not listed, you can request a Statement of Comparability. The faculty still decides on admission.
Use anabin to check your own foreign degree and university. It is not a tool for checking German universities. For that, use the HRK Hochschulkompass

Delivery modes describe how doctorates are normally organised; remote supervision is possible only if your supervisor and faculty agree. Check each university’s doctoral office before applying.
RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau’s Distance and Independent Studies Center (DISC) offers distance master’s and certificate programmes, not doctorates. RPTU was formed in 2023 by merging TU Kaiserslautern and the University of Landau, so older pages that mention TU Kaiserslautern are out of date.
Are There Professional Doctorates (DBA) in Germany?
Yes, but they work differently from the research doctorate. Most DBA programs in Germany are part-time and are offered by the business schools or universities of applied sciences with the partnership of UK partner universities, and the degree is often awarded by the UK partner. These programs are specifically designed for managers and executives who want to earn a doctorate degree while continuing their existing careers. A fully online DBA delivered from Germany is uncommon; the closest examples pair distance-learning courses with a thesis..
| Provider (Germany) | Degree and awarding body | Format and length | Entry requirements (as stated by provider) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Munich Business School | Doctor of Business Administration, awarded by Sheffield Hallam University (UK) | Part-time, about 4 years, English | At least 5 years of work experience, including 3 in a managerial role |
| Landshut University of Applied Sciences / SCE Munich | DBA with Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh Business School) or Swansea University. Provider says it leads to a doctorate (Dr.) recognised in Germany; supervision by a British and a German professor | Part-time, while working | Master-level degree and at least 3 years of relevant professional experience |
| FHDW (private university of applied sciences) | DBA awarded by Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh) | Part-time; includes 3 distance-learning courses on doctoral business research, then the thesis | Master’s, MBA or Diplom in a business-related field with a grade of at least "good" |
| Steinbeis SIBE (School of International Business and Entrepreneurship) | DBA with Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University (title-awarding university) | Part-time or job-integrated, 6 semesters, English; 3 online courses plus optional seminars in Edinburgh or Dubai | Preferably at least 5 years of post-qualifying work experience |

Table Note:
Details come from each provider’s own page on 16 October 2026. We have not listed fees because we could not confirm current prices. Providers may change intakes or close programs so confirm availability, the awarding university and accreditation before you apply.
Is a UK-awarded DBA recognized in Germany?
Some providers, such as Landshut University of Applied Sciences and FHDW, state that the doctorate is recognized in Germany. We could not verify that independendtly. German authorities set the rules for using a foreign doctoral title in Germany, and anabin explains the legal framework. Check the awarding university, not just the German partner, and ask the provider to confirm title use in writing.
The German partner is not always the degree-awarding institution. Before you pay, confirm which university awards the DBA and whether it is accredited in its own country.
How does a DBA differ from a research doctorate such as a Dr. rer. pol.?
DBA programs are different from research doctorates such as Dr.rer. Pol. As DBA programs are applied research doctorate programs, in Germany usually offers part-time and designed for working business professionals. However, a research doctorate program in business is designed around academic research and is usually offered in full-time modules.

However, DAAD’s bi-national grant covers some of these costs for eligible candidates.
How Can I Fund a PhD in Germany?
Free PhD Programs in Germany does not mean that it covers your rent, travel and other additional expenses, so to minimize this additional cost you can look for these funding routes.
- Research-associate jobs. You are employed by a university chair or institute and work on your doctorate there. This is the most common route and usually requires working on site.
- DAAD bi-national grants. For doctoral candidates enrolled at a home university. DAAD pays €1,300 per month during stays in Germany, plus insurance contributions, a travel allowance and a research allowance, for 7 to 24 months. Applicants should normally have graduated no more than six years before the deadline, have started their doctorate no more than three years ago, and not have lived in Germany for more than 15 months.
- Structured programs and research schools. DFG Research Training Groups and International Max Planck Research Schools advertise funded doctoral positions.
- Funding databases and jobs. DAAD points doctoral candidates to its scholarship database (funding-guide.de), the Research in Germany funding databases, and job offers at universities, research organizations and private companies.
- Regional scholarships. For example, Berlin’s Elsa Neumann scholarships fund doctoral research for up to three years.
- Employer sponsorship. Used in external doctorates, where you stay employed outside the university.
- EU doctoral networks (MSCA). These are employment contracts. They follow a physical mobility principle, expect full-time work at the host organisation, and apply a rule that you must not have lived or worked in the host country for more than 12 months in the previous 3 years.
Funded does not mean remote. Residence permits for doctoral candidates from outside the EU are generally tied to a work contract with a research facility or to enrolment. Always ask what on-site presence a funded position requires.
For more funding options worldwide, see our scholarships and funding guide.
How Can I Check That a German Doctorate Is Legitimate and Accredited?
Accreditation is the most important factor no matter which country and what online doctoral programs you are going to enroll in. This is reason most of the potential candidates searches for accredited online PhD Germany. To minimize the risk of enrolling in a fake or low-quality degree program.
In Germany, what matters most is whether the institution may award doctorates and who awards your degree. Check these in order:
- Is it a state or state-recognized university? The HRK Hochschulkompass lists state and state-recognized German universities and their doctoral opportunities.
- Does it have the right to award doctorates (Promotionsrecht)? Universities of applied sciences generally do not, except through cooperation or special state rules. Ask for the Promotionsordnung (doctoral regulations).
- Who awards the degree? For partnered programs, such as many DBAs, the degree may come from a UK university rather than the German partner.
- Is a named professor willing to supervise you? No supervisor usually means no genuine doctorate.
- Do you need to check your own degree? Use anabin for foreign universities and degrees, including how a foreign title may be used in Germany.
Red flags: a "doctorate" priced per month, no named supervisor, a promise of a degree in under a year, or payment demanded before any admission decision.
Do I Need a Visa, and Can I Stay and Work in Germany After My PhD?
If you are enrolled in the Distance Learning PhD program in Germany that allows you to complete most of the part of your doctoral degree in your home country, so you are required to check short-stay visa rules for your nationality. If you relocate, the residence permit depends on how you do the doctorate:
- Employed doctoral candidates from outside the EU can obtain a residence permit for research when they complete their thesis as part of a work contract with a research facility in Germany.
- Enrolled doctoral candidates are generally treated like students for residence purposes. Study permits are usually issued for two years and can be renewed for two more. Non-EU applicants must also prove funds of €992 per month (as of 1 January 2025), according to DAAD.
- After the doctorate: graduates can apply for a residence permit of up to 18 months to find qualified work. Researchers also get up to 18 months after their research position ends. An EU Blue Card is available for qualified jobs; salary thresholds apply and change over time.
- Settling: graduates of German higher education institutions can apply for a settlement permit after working in Germany for more than two years.
Immigration rules change often. Check the Make it in Germany portal and your nearest German embassy before you plan.
Do I Need to Speak German to Do a PhD in Germany?
Not really, but it depends a lot on the faculty and your supervisor. For example, The humanities faculty at Freie Universität Berlin states that German is not mandatory for writing a dissertation, and DAAD lists doctoral programs taught in English. Other institutions work mainly in German. DAAD grant holders can also receive German-course support. Ask your supervisor what language you will work in and check the faculty’s language requirement in its doctoral regulations.

- What is the total cost once visits, fees and living costs are included? In Ge
In Germany, public universities charge doctoral candidates no tuition but most routes need regular on-site contact. UK-partnered DBAs run mostly part-time with online elements but charge programme fees. Frequently Asked Questions :
What are the best online PhD programs in Germany?
There is no single best Program, because fully online PhDs are rare in Germany. Useful starting points are FernUniversität in Hagen (part-time and external doctorates), the Technical University of Munich (external and part-time doctorates) and Freie Universität Berlin (individual, structured and part-time doctorates). For a professional doctorate, see the DBA table above. Always confirm remote arrangements with your supervisor.
Are PhD programs in Germany are really free?
DAAD says tuition is free for doctoral studies for at least the first six semesters at all public universities. You still pay a semester contribution (roughly €70–€430) and your own living costs. Private providers, including DBA Programs, set their own fees.
Can international students apply for fully funded PhDs in Germany?
Yes. Funded options include research-associate jobs, structured Programs with fellowships and DAAD grants. DAAD’s bi-national Program pays €1,300 per month during stays in Germany. Competition is strong, and most paid posts require working on site.
Can I study a PhD in Germany online from abroad?
Rarely fully online. Realistic options are a bi-national (sandwich or cotutelle) doctorate with enrolment at your home university, an external or part-time doctorate with regular contact with your supervisor, or a UK-partnered DBA. Ask your supervisor before you apply.
Can working professionals enroll in online PhD programs in Germany?
Yes, through external, part-time or DBA routes, though few are fully online. TUM allows a doctorate while employed at a company or research institution, FU Berlin allows part-time doctorates with approval, and DBA providers typically ask for a master’s degree and several years of experience.
How long does a PhD in Germany take?
DAAD guidance gives about three to five years for an individual doctorate. FU Berlin says candidates should normally finish within three years, though many take longer alongside work. Part-time routes take longer.
Is there a DBA in Germany?
Yes, mostly part-time Programs run with UK partner universities, for example at Munich Business School, Landshut University of Applied Sciences, FHDW and Steinbeis SIBE. Check which university awards the degree.
Are German doctorates accredited?
What matters is that the institution has the right to award doctorates and that a professor supervises you. Check the university in the HRK Hochschulkompass. For partnered DBAs, also check the awarding university in its own country.
Can a university of applied sciences award a PhD?
Generally, no. Exceptions include Baden-Württemberg’s Promotionsverband (since October 2022) and cooperative doctorates with partner universities.
What is the difference between a Dr. and a PhD in Germany?
Most German doctorates award a subject-specific “Dr.” title. Some universities award the PhD title through structured graduate Programs, for example Freie Universität Berlin through its Dahlem Research School.
Can I stay in Germany after my doctorate?
Graduates can apply for a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for qualified work, and researchers get up to 18 months after their research position ends. Rules change, so check the Make it in Germany portal.
Is an Online or Hybrid PhD in Germany Worth It?
If you want a research doctorate at a public university with tuition-free doctoral studies, Germany is hard to beat. If you need a fully online Program, it is not the easiest country to find one. Be realistic: choose a route (bi-national, part-time or external, or a DBA), agree supervision in writing, confirm who awards the degree, and budget for visits and living costs.
