Can you really do an online PhD in Australia?
Yes, several distance learning PhD programs are available in Australia, but with some conditions. Several universities in Australia offer the flexibility of online doctoral programs where you can work with your supervisor remotely. The Phrae Online PhD Australia covers different options, like fully online to blended/hybrid candidature, where you are required to visit the campus now and then.
One of the main differences of Australian PhD online programs with other countries is that almost every Australian Online Doctorate Degree is higher degree by research (HDR). You do not have the flexibility to choose from the fixed online course list. You are enrolled to complete your own research project under the supervision of a supervisor, and it must be completed within the time university allows.
Official course pages confirm online study options for the PhD at UniSQ, the University of New England (UNE) and Charles Darwin University (CDU). CQUniversity offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Offshore) for candidates who stay in their home country, and Torrens University Australia lists several online professional doctorates.
In Australia What online research candidature usually involves?
- Remote supervision. UNE, for example, says candidates interact with supervisors online or on campus.
- A supervisor first. UniSQ and UNE both ask you to agree on a topic with a staff member before you apply.
- A research project, not coursework only. Even professional doctorates include a thesis or major research project.
- Field limits. Laboratory work, fieldwork or clinical placements may still need you on site, so ask your supervisor early.
Search the course page for the words Online, External or Offshore. If the page does not name an online mode, email the graduate research office and ask in writing.
Do you need a student visa for an online PhD in Australia?
Visa requirement depends on where you study and in what program you are enrolled in. There are two different routes:
Studying fully online from your home country
If you are enrolled in a fully online PhD or Doctorate program in Australia and studying from you home country, then the student visa rules do not apply on you. For example, Deakin University explains that the one-third online limit applies only to student visa holders, and that students who return home to finish their course online no longer need to follow it.
In Australia universities have the authority to set their own rules on who can enroll offshore. So, it is highly recommended that you should confirm this with the graduate research office before admission.
Studying in Australia on a student visa
holders. Universities such as Deakin and UNE explain that up to one-third of your course can be online, and that you must normally enroll in at least one face-to-face unit in each compulsory study period. UNE adds that online units count toward that one-third limit.
We found no official statement that research degrees are exempt from the one-third rule. Ask the international office how it applies to your candidature before you pay any deposit or book travel.
EQSA states that providers can only enroll and teach international students in Australia if they are on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Check a provider on the TEQSA National Register and on CRICOS.

The study mode is online, and the course runs 4 years full-time or 8 years part-time. CQU says the offshore PhD is limited to high-quality applicants in particular discipline areas, so check that your topic fits.

Torrens University Australia: online professional doctorates
Torrens lists a group of professional doctorates as higher degrees by research. Most show On campus, Online and Blended study modes. The table in the next section shows the programs we verified.
Torrens higher-degree-by-research listings we checked, the business-related doctorate is called the Professional Doctorate (Business Transformation). We did not find a program named DBA, so we use the names Torrens publishes.
University of Canberra: Professional Doctorate in Business Administration (Research)
The University of Canberra lists a Professional Doctorate in Business Administration (Research) worth 96 credit points, taught through the Canberra Business School. The course page explains its delivery modes (Online and Online Plus), but older UC course documents show the program as on campus. Confirm the current delivery mode with UC before you rely on it.
Charles Sturt University (CSU): online PhD, DBA and other doctorates
Charles Sturt University is a public university known for distance education. Its official 2026 international fee page has a separate Online table that lists several doctorates, so these programs are offered online to international students. Fees below are annual full-time amounts (eight 8-point subjects) and are indicative for 2026.
| CSU program | Online fee (AUD a year) | On-campus fee (AUD a year) | Note |

- Fees apply to international students. We could not verify a domestic full-fee figure. CSU says successful Research Training Program (RTP) applicants pay no tuition, and candidates who exceed their RTP entitlement pay the domestic fee.
- Location depends on supervision. CSU states that the study location for its research degrees depends on the availability of suitable supervisors and student support.
Look at the CSU international fee page for the latest figures. CSU also lists theology and Islamic studies courses; we have not included any of them.
What types of doctorate can you study in Australia?
The Online Doctoral Programs in Australia, including both Research PhDs and Professional Doctorates sit a level 10 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), the highest level. The University of Queensland's policy summarizes the AQF definition of a professional doctorate as a structured program that typically includes advanced coursework and research.
| Type | What it involves | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Research doctorate (PhD) | An original research project under supervision, examined as a thesis. Usually the longest route. | Academics, researchers and anyone planning a research career |
| Professional doctorate (for example Torrens, CQU EdD, UC) | Coursework plus a research thesis or project linked to professional practice. | Experienced professionals who want an applied doctorate |
| PhD or doctorate by prior publication | Examination of a body of published work instead of a new thesis. Strict eligibility rules apply. | Established researchers who already have a strong publication record |
| Higher doctorate (DLitt, DSc, LLD) | An award for a distinguished body of published work, assessed without supervision. Not a program you enrol in and study. | Senior scholars, normally already holding a PhD and linked to the awarding university |

|---|---|---|

Other online professional doctorates in Australia we verified
| Program | Delivery | Structure | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|

| CSU Doctor of Business Administration | Listed in CSU's online fee table | See CSU's handbook | International online fee AUD 34,640 a year (2026). Confirm duration with CSU |
AIB describes its DBA as fully online, with contact encouraged through online forums and webinars. For the other programs, ask whether you need a workplace co-supervisor and whether any workshops or intensives are on campus, because the official pages do not always say.
The University of Western Australia’s Doctor of Education (48 points of coursework plus a 144-point thesis) lists Perth and Singapore, with no online mode shown in its handbook. Western Sydney University’s Doctor of Education is listed as in-person study on third-party course listings. Do not assume an education doctorate is online until the university’s own page says so.
Professional doctorates in Australia still include a research thesis or project. James Cook University’s Doctor of Health Professional Education, for instance, is a research doctorate with a professional doctorate research thesis. If you want a doctorate with no dissertation at all, Australia is a poor fit.

Are there online clinical or health doctorates in Australia?
Yes, but not in large numbers, as well it is not as easy to take fully online as compared to PhD. Health Doctorates usually blend the structure of coursework with large research. In addition, Nursing and Clinical fields add professional registration rules as well.
| Program | Delivery | Structure and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Flinders University, Doctor of Public Health | Delivery list includes Online; confirm | A 108-unit higher degree by research: 36 units of doctoral coursework and a 72-unit dissertation. Three years full-time or up to six years part-time |
| James Cook University, Doctor of Public Health | Listed as In person and Online (third-party listing; confirm) | A research professional doctorate in which research makes up two-thirds of the program and ends in a thesis. Listed at 4 years full-time |
| La Trobe University, Doctor of Public Health (Professional Doctorate) | Melbourne (Bundoora) campus, full-time | First-year coursework, then a thesis of up to 60,000 words. 4 years full-time or 8 years part-time. Not an online option |
| La Trobe University, Doctor of Nursing (Professional Doctorate) | On campus (Melbourne and Mildura) | Applicants must be eligible for registration as a nurse with AHPRA or an approved international equivalent, plus professional experience |
Clinical and nursing doctorates may require professional registration in Australia, and a nursing registration from another country does not guarantee the right to practise in Australia. We did not find a verified online clinical psychology doctorate, so we do not list one.
For nursing and health subject guides, see Nursing PhD and DNP online and Top online PhD in psychology programs.
Is there a PhD by prior publication in Australia?
Yes, Like UK PhD by Published Work, Australian Universities offers the option of PhD by Prior Publication. However, this option is specifically available for established researchers. To remove any confusion, it is necessary to clear that PhD by prior Publication is also called PhD by Published Work or by Portfolio.
In this model, you are asked to submit your present work that is already published, along with a written statement, instead of writing a new thesis. And this is the shortest and fastest PhD Options available in Australia.
| University | Program | What it involves | Mode or notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Griffith University | PhD by Prior Publication (program 6024) | Established researchers of international standing; portfolio of peer-reviewed work with you as sole or primary author; people who already hold a doctorate are not admitted; 80 credit points over 0.5 to 1 year full-time | Page lists Online and Offshore among locations |
| Flinders University | PhD by Prior Published Work | Apply at least three years after completing your qualifying degree; the thesis is a contextual statement plus a body of published work accumulated before candidature | Confirm with Flinders |
| Charles Sturt University | PhD (Arts and Education) by Prior Publication | Listed with its own 2026 online fee (AUD 33,120 a year). Entry rules not verified; ask CSU | Online fee table |
| Torrens University Australia | Professional Doctorate (By Prior Works) | For accomplished professionals with a distinguished career; eight thesis units over 12 months | Face-to-face or online supervision |
| CQUniversity | Doctor of Philosophy by Portfolio (CD84) | A PhD thesis that incorporates your existing peer-reviewed outputs, unified by a literature review, discussion and future directions chapters. You need a substantial body of peer-reviewed work for which you are largely responsible, plus a research Masters, an Honours degree or an equivalent qualification. 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time; applications open year-round | Study mode: On Campus, Online |
The University of Tasmania’s PhD by Prior Publication, for example, normally requires at least five years of association with the university and staff or adjunct status when you submit. Always read the entry rules before you plan around this route.
A genuine prior-publication doctorate is examined, requires peer-reviewed work and comes from a TEQSA-registered provider. Any website that offers a doctorate for a fee with no examination should be treated as a red flag.
What about a Doctor of Letters or other higher doctorate in Australia?
Australia also has higher doctorates such as the Doctor of Letters (DLitt), Doctor of Science (DSc) and Doctor of Laws (LLD). They sit above the PhD, and La Trobe University describes its Doctor of Letters as recognized at AQF Level 10 as a Higher Doctorate.
They are not study programs, so you cannot take one online. The University of South Australia's policy says a higher doctorate requires a level of attainment substantially higher than a PhD and that candidates must normally hold a PhD or research doctorate. The University of Technology Sydney's rules assess a body of published work in which the applicant is author or joint author, and its eligibility rules require a close connection with the university, such as years as an academic staff member.
A search for “doctor of letters online” will not lead to a genuine enrolment. Treat any site that sells a DLitt or DSc for a fee as a red flag, and read our section on checking that a provider is registered.

If you are looking for a no dissertation doctorate programs online in Australia like it is offered in the USA. Then Answer is “No”. In Australia, online professional doctorate programs also include a thesis or substantial research project. All three depend on a strong record of existing work, so they are not shortcuts for new researchers.

Several funding options are available for Distance learning PhD and Doctorate programs in Australia, but the fully funded online programs are rare. The Research Training Program (RTP) pays tuition fees for eligible domestic students and supports stipend scholarships for domestic and international candidates. | University | 2026 full-time RTP stipend | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CDU | AUD 35,489 | Tax-free; up to three years full-time for a doctorate; relocation allowance up to AUD 2,000 (domestic) or AUD 2,500 (international) |

UNE’s RTP page says international students must be enrolled full-time and on campus for the duration of their candidature, as required by the National Code. A stipend therefore rarely goes together with fully online study. Check this rule for each scholarship before you apply.
UniSQ and CDU also publish scholarship pages for international research students, and deadlines apply separately from your course application. See our guides to fully funded online doctoral programs and scholarships and funding for online doctorate programs.

Australian doctoral entry is based on your degrees, research experience, research proposal and supervisor availability. The UniSQ and UNE entry requirements list academic qualifications and English tests, not the GRE or GMAT.

Not as a standard route. Only publication or prior-works routes for experienced researchers are shorter than a typical PhD.
