PhD in Australia Online (2026): Verified Online PhD & Doctorate Options

Explore online and distance PhD and professional doctorate options at Australian universities, including fees, funding, visa rules and entry requirements.

Are you exploring for different online PhD Australia options? Many of the Australian Universities offers hybrid and online doctoral programs. Although both research PhD’s in hybrid and online format are more common in Australia but some of the well-known and accredited universities in Australia also offer professional doctorate programs in fields such as business and education etc., to local and international students.

For most the distance learning doctoral programs in Australia, qualification framework is designed around research, and you need a supervisor and an approved proposal or project before you can enroll.

Here at Best Online Doctoral Programs, Doctorate and PhD online in Australia page, we offer you the opportunity to explore some of the best verified online PhD and doctorate options available in Australia. Including the PhD by Prior Publication option, with fees, funding, visa rules (if short residency required), and admission requirements, checked and verified in October 2026.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Online PhD Australia options exist, and so do online professional doctorates. Both are research-based, so you need a supervisor and an accepted proposal or project before you can enroll.
  • Official course pages list online study for the PhD at UniSQ, UNE and CDU, an Offshore PhD at CQ University, and online professional doctorates at Torrens, AIB and UNE.
  • Student visa holders living in Australia face a one-third online study limit. Studying fully online from your home country is treated differently.
  • Funding is not the same for everyone. Eligible domestic students can have tuition covered under the Research Training Program (RTP), while international students normally pay fees unless they win a scholarship.

Can you really do an online PhD in Australia?

Yes, several distance learning PhD programs are available in Australia, but with some conditions. Several universities in Australia offer the flexibility of online doctoral programs where you can work with your supervisor remotely. The Phrae Online PhD Australia covers different options, like fully online to blended/hybrid candidature, where you are required to visit the campus now and then.

One of the main differences of Australian PhD online programs with other countries is that almost every Australian Online Doctorate Degree is higher degree by research (HDR). You do not have the flexibility to choose from the fixed online course list. You are enrolled to complete your own research project under the supervision of a supervisor, and it must be completed within the time university allows.

Official course pages confirm online study options for the PhD at UniSQ, the University of New England (UNE) and Charles Darwin University (CDU). CQUniversity offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Offshore) for candidates who stay in their home country, and Torrens University Australia lists several online professional doctorates.

In Australia What online research candidature usually involves?

Quick check before you shortlist

Search the course page for the words Online, External or Offshore. If the page does not name an online mode, email the graduate research office and ask in writing.

Do you need a student visa for an online PhD in Australia?

Visa requirement depends on where you study and in what program you are enrolled in. There are two different routes:

Studying fully online from your home country

If you are enrolled in a fully online PhD or Doctorate program in Australia and studying from you home country, then the student visa rules do not apply on you. For example, Deakin University explains that the one-third online limit applies only to student visa holders, and that students who return home to finish their course online no longer need to follow it.

In Australia universities have the authority to set their own rules on who can enroll offshore. So, it is highly recommended that you should confirm this with the graduate research office before admission.

Studying in Australia on a student visa

holders. Universities such as Deakin and UNE explain that up to one-third of your course can be online, and that you must normally enroll in at least one face-to-face unit in each compulsory study period. UNE adds that online units count toward that one-third limit.

Do not Assume a Research Degree is Exempt:

We found no official statement that research degrees are exempt from the one-third rule. Ask the international office how it applies to your candidature before you pay any deposit or book travel.

Why "CRICOS" Matters:

EQSA states that providers can only enroll and teach international students in Australia if they are on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Check a provider on the TEQSA National Register and on CRICOS.

Each program is described below. Fees and funding come after the program pages.

University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ): online PhD

  • Program: Doctor of Philosophy, with specializations that include Education, Business and Management, Nursing, Health, Psychology, Law, Information Systems and Computer Science.
  • Delivery: the official page lists Online as one of its locations.
  • Length: the page lists 4 years, or the part-time equivalent.
  • Entry: a first-class or second-class (Division A) Honours degree, or a Masters degree with a thesis component, or equivalent qualifications. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each band; UniSQ says other English tests may also be accepted.
  • Indicative fee: AUD 36,160 a year for a domestic full-fee-paying student (2026 estimate, varies by discipline).
  • How to apply: clarify your topic and find a supervisor first, then apply directly to UniSQ. UniSQ suggests allowing at least 25 working days before your start date.
Many websites still list a UniSQ EdD or DBA

UniSQ’s own handbook marks the Doctor of Education and the Doctor of Business Administration as discontinued and no longer available for admissions. If a site tells you to apply for either one, check with UniSQ first.

University of New England (UNE): online PhD

UNE says it pioneered distance education for working adults in the 1950s, and its PhD page says most students choose to study online. Candidates interact with supervisors online or on campus.

  • Length: 4 years full-time or 8 years part-time.
  • Intakes: online study is offered in Research Period 1 and Research Period 2. UNE accepts applications at any time.
  • Entry: a Masters qualification with at least 25% research, or an Honours degree with at least upper second-class honours, or an AQF Level 8 or 9 qualification with adequate research preparation, or equivalent prior research work.
  • Application documents: certified transcripts, evidence that a UNE academic will supervise you, a research proposal of no more than three A4 pages, two referee reports, identity documents and English language evidence.
  • Fees: UNE estimates AUD 34,496 for the first year for international students, and says fees vary by discipline. Eligible Australian and New Zealand students may be funded under the RTP and pay no tuition for the normal course duration.

Charles Darwin University (CDU): online PhD

  • Delivery: the official page lists Online for Semester 1 and Semester 2, as well as several campuses.
  • Length: CDU says PhD candidates usually complete their research over 3 to 4 years, under the direction of two or more supervisors.
  • English: IELTS Academic overall minimum of 6.5.
  • Fees: CDU states that international students pay fees for a research degree and that scholarships are available to reduce them.

CQ University (CQU): PhD (Offshore) and Doctor of Education

CQU's Doctor of Philosophy (Offshore) is specifically designed for the professionals who prefer to complete their degree while be in their home country for a substantive part.

The study mode is online, and the course runs 4 years full-time or 8 years part-time. CQU says the offshore PhD is limited to high-quality applicants in particular discipline areas, so check that your topic fits.

The Doctor of Education is listed with On Campus and Online study modes. It is a course of supervised research that can be undertaken in a range of fields.

Torrens University Australia: online professional doctorates

Torrens lists a group of professional doctorates as higher degrees by research. Most show On campus, Online and Blended study modes. The table in the next section shows the programs we verified.

Torrens Business Doctoral Degree Online Clarification:

Torrens higher-degree-by-research listings we checked, the business-related doctorate is called the Professional Doctorate (Business Transformation). We did not find a program named DBA, so we use the names Torrens publishes.

University of Canberra: Professional Doctorate in Business Administration (Research)

The University of Canberra lists a Professional Doctorate in Business Administration (Research) worth 96 credit points, taught through the Canberra Business School. The course page explains its delivery modes (Online and Online Plus), but older UC course documents show the program as on campus. Confirm the current delivery mode with UC before you rely on it.

Charles Sturt University (CSU): online PhD, DBA and other doctorates

Charles Sturt University is a public university known for distance education. Its official 2026 international fee page has a separate Online table that lists several doctorates, so these programs are offered online to international students. Fees below are annual full-time amounts (eight 8-point subjects) and are indicative for 2026.

  • Duration and intakes are not confirmed. CSU’s own pages did not show them to us. A third-party listing shows three start sessions (March, July, November) and a minimum of three years for the PhD, so confirm both with CSU.
  • Fees apply to international students. We could not verify a domestic full-fee figure. CSU says successful Research Training Program (RTP) applicants pay no tuition, and candidates who exceed their RTP entitlement pay the domestic fee.
  • Location depends on supervision. CSU states that the study location for its research degrees depends on the availability of suitable supervisors and student support.
CSU Courses Not Included:

Look at the CSU international fee page for the latest figures. CSU also lists theology and Islamic studies courses; we have not included any of them.

What types of doctorate can you study in Australia?

The Online Doctoral Programs in Australia, including both Research PhDs and Professional Doctorates sit a level 10 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), the highest level. The University of Queensland's policy summarizes the AQF definition of a professional doctorate as a structured program that typically includes advanced coursework and research.

TypeWhat it involvesWho it suits
Research doctorate (PhD)An original research project under supervision, examined as a thesis. Usually the longest route.Academics, researchers and anyone planning a research career
Professional doctorate (for example Torrens, CQU EdD, UC)Coursework plus a research thesis or project linked to professional practice.Experienced professionals who want an applied doctorate
PhD or doctorate by prior publicationExamination of a body of published work instead of a new thesis. Strict eligibility rules apply.Established researchers who already have a strong publication record
Higher doctorate (DLitt, DSc, LLD)An award for a distinguished body of published work, assessed without supervision. Not a program you enrol in and study.Senior scholars, normally already holding a PhD and linked to the awarding university

Can you get an online professional doctorate in Australia?

Yes. Torrens University Australia has the clearest set of online options we could verify. It lists professional doctorates that can be studied online, on campus or blended, and every one ends in a research thesis.

Torrens programStudy modeStructure (from Torrens)
Professional Doctorate (Research)On campus, Online, BlendedEight subjects and 16 thesis units; about 10 hours of study a week
Professional Doctorate (Applied Research)On campus, OnlineCore subjects, thesis subjects, a work-integrated learning subject and electives; thesis plus an advanced professional practice portfolio; involves a business sponsor

For other professional doctorates, see CQU’s Doctor of Education and the University of Canberra’s business doctorate above.

Check Supervision Rules for "Online" Doctorates in Australia

AIB describes its DBA as fully online, with contact encouraged through online forums and webinars. For the other programs, ask whether you need a workplace co-supervisor and whether any workshops or intensives are on campus, because the official pages do not always say.

Some Education Doctorates are on Campus

The University of Western Australia’s Doctor of Education (48 points of coursework plus a 144-point thesis) lists Perth and Singapore, with no online mode shown in its handbook. Western Sydney University’s Doctor of Education is listed as in-person study on third-party course listings. Do not assume an education doctorate is online until the university’s own page says so.

Professional Doctorate does not mean no Research

Professional doctorates in Australia still include a research thesis or project. James Cook University’s Doctor of Health Professional Education, for instance, is a research doctorate with a professional doctorate research thesis. If you want a doctorate with no dissertation at all, Australia is a poor fit.

Looking at subject-specific doctorates? Visit our guides to business doctorates, education doctorates , Nursing, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, Psychology. page for programs in other countries. As well you can check Our Doctoral Program By Subject Hub and to compare, you can check detailed page Online PhD and Doctorate Programs Comparison by Subject.

Are there online clinical or health doctorates in Australia?

Yes, but not in large numbers, as well it is not as easy to take fully online as compared to PhD. Health Doctorates usually blend the structure of coursework with large research. In addition, Nursing and Clinical fields add professional registration rules as well.

ProgramDeliveryStructure and notes
Flinders University, Doctor of Public HealthDelivery list includes Online; confirmA 108-unit higher degree by research: 36 units of doctoral coursework and a 72-unit dissertation. Three years full-time or up to six years part-time

La Trobe University, Doctor of Nursing (Professional Doctorate)On campus (Melbourne and Mildura)Applicants must be eligible for registration as a nurse with AHPRA or an approved international equivalent, plus professional experience
Registration and Placements can Rule out Online study

Clinical and nursing doctorates may require professional registration in Australia, and a nursing registration from another country does not guarantee the right to practise in Australia. We did not find a verified online clinical psychology doctorate, so we do not list one.

For nursing and health subject guides, see Nursing PhD and DNP online and Top online PhD in psychology programs.

Is there a PhD by prior publication in Australia?

Yes, Like UK PhD by Published Work, Australian Universities offers the option of PhD by Prior Publication. However, this option is specifically available for established researchers. To remove any confusion, it is necessary to clear that PhD by prior Publication is also called PhD by Published Work or by Portfolio.

In this model, you are asked to submit your present work that is already published, along with a written statement, instead of writing a new thesis. And this is the shortest and fastest PhD Options available in Australia.

UniversityProgramWhat it involvesMode or notes

CQUniversityDoctor of Philosophy by Portfolio (CD84)A PhD thesis that incorporates your existing peer-reviewed outputs, unified by a literature review, discussion and future directions chapters. You need a substantial body of peer-reviewed work for which you are largely responsible, plus a research Masters, an Honours degree or an equivalent qualification. 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time; applications open year-roundStudy mode: On Campus, Online
Some Routes are not open to the public

The University of Tasmania’s PhD by Prior Publication, for example, normally requires at least five years of association with the university and staff or adjunct status when you submit. Always read the entry rules before you plan around this route.

Do not confuse this with a fake "life experience" degree

A genuine prior-publication doctorate is examined, requires peer-reviewed work and comes from a TEQSA-registered provider. Any website that offers a doctorate for a fee with no examination should be treated as a red flag.

What about a Doctor of Letters or other higher doctorate in Australia?

Australia also has higher doctorates such as the Doctor of Letters (DLitt), Doctor of Science (DSc) and Doctor of Laws (LLD). They sit above the PhD, and La Trobe University describes its Doctor of Letters as recognized at AQF Level 10 as a Higher Doctorate.

They are not study programs, so you cannot take one online. The University of South Australia's policy says a higher doctorate requires a level of attainment substantially higher than a PhD and that candidates must normally hold a PhD or research doctorate. The University of Technology Sydney's rules assess a body of published work in which the applicant is author or joint author, and its eligibility rules require a close connection with the university, such as years as an academic staff member.

Higher doctorates are not an online route

A search for “doctor of letters online” will not lead to a genuine enrolment. Treat any site that sells a DLitt or DSc for a fee as a red flag, and read our section on checking that a provider is registered.

Is there a no dissertation online doctorate in Australia?

If you are looking for a no dissertation doctorate programs online in Australia like it is offered in the USA. Then Answer is “No”. In Australia, online professional doctorate programs also include a thesis or substantial research project. Although the nearest alternatives for no dissertation online doctorate programs in Australia are applied research projects (Torrens' Applied Research doctorate) and Publication based PhD routes for researchers who alrady have a portfolio of published work.

If avoiding a dissertation matters most to you, compare our guides to online doctorates without a dissertation, and for Comparison between Dissertation and no Dissertation Degree, check out Dissertation vs No Dissertation Doctoral Programs Comparison

What is the fastest online PhD in Australia? Is there a 1 year PhD?

For 1 Year PhD Online in Australia programs, the answer is “No”. As Official Australian university pages show a typical PhD of 3 to 4 years full time( UniSQ 4 years, UNE 4 years full-time, CDU usually 3 to 4 years), with part-time study up to 8 years

The shortest routes 1 Year PhD programs but without online Availability are only available for experienced researchers. Griffith lists a PhD by Prior Publication of 0.5 to 1 year full-time, Torrens lists a Professional Doctorate (By Prior Works) of 12 months, and CQUniversity lists a Doctor of Philosophy by Portfolio of 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time. All three depend on a strong record of existing work, so they are not shortcuts for new researchers.

Searching for 1 year PhD programs online in Australia?

Treat any site promising a 12-month doctorate with no publications as unreliable. For genuine fast options in other countries, see our guides to the fastest online PhD and doctorate programs and 1 year online PhD programs.

How much does an online PhD in Australia cost? Is there a cheapest PhD in Australia?

In Australia, the cost varies and depends on the various factors. Mainly on your status (Domestic or International), you discipline and whether you have any funding. So, it is difficult what one university is offering Cheapest Online PhD program in Australia.

UniSQ says it covers up to four years full-time or eight years part-time for a doctorate. International students normally pay fees, although CDU says scholarships are available to reduce them.

Fee figures change every year

Fees are indicative and are reviewed annually. Add costs such as the student services and amenities fee (UNE lists AUD 373 for full-time students) and health cover. Check the university’s current fee schedule before you decide.

Is there a fully funded online PhD in Australia?

Several funding options are available for Distance learning PhD and Doctorate programs in Australia, but the fully funded online programs are rare. The Research Training Program (RTP) pays tuition fees for eligible domestic students and supports stipend scholarships for domestic and international candidates. Stipend scholarships are awarded competitively, not automatically.

UNE’s RTP page says international students must be enrolled full-time and on campus for the duration of their candidature, as required by the National Code. A stipend therefore rarely goes together with fully online study. Check this rule for each scholarship before you apply.

UniSQ and CDU also publish scholarship pages for international research students, and deadlines apply separately from your course application. See our guides to fully funded online doctoral programs and scholarships and funding for online doctorate programs.

Which subjects can you study for a PhD in Australia?

How do you apply for an online PhD in Australia?

Recognition Abroad:

An Australian doctorate is a Level 10 AQF qualification, but how your home country or employer recognizes it depends on local rules. Check with your national education authority or employer if you need a formal credential evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions :

Are online PhDs in Australia legitimate and recognized?

Yes, when the provider is registered with TEQSA. Doctoral degrees sit at AQF Level 10. Check out the provider on the TEQSA National Register. CRICOS registration is the separate requirement for providers that teach international students in Australia.

Often yes, but each university decides case by case. CQU has a dedicated offshore PhD, and UNE, UniSQ and CDU list online delivery. If you will live in Australia on a student visa, the one-third online study limit applies.

Australian doctoral entry is based on your degrees, research experience, research proposal and supervisor availability. The UniSQ and UNE entry requirements list academic qualifications and English tests, not the GRE or GMAT.

No. A PhD is examined by thesis, and professional doctorates also include a thesis or research project. A PhD by prior publication replaces a new thesis with a body of published work, but only for established researchers.

Official pages list 3 to 4 years full-time and up to 8 years part-time. Publication-based routes can be shorter, for example 12 months at Torrens, 0.5 to 1 year at Griffith, or 1 year full-time at CQUniversity (PhD by Portfolio).

Not as a standard route. Only publication or prior-works routes for experienced researchers are shorter than a typical PhD.

Both are Level 10. A PhD is a research degree built around original research. A professional doctorate combines coursework with research linked to professional practice.

Part-time candidature is available (for example UNE offers 8 years part-time), and UNE says its online PhD students are mostly over 30 and balance study with work and family. Torrens’ professional doctorates are designed around about 10 hours of study a week.

It is rare. RTP covers tuition for eligible domestic students, and RTP stipends are competitive. UNE requires international stipend holders to study full-time on campus.

Based on official pages, UniSQ, UNE, CDU and CQU offer online PhD options, Charles Sturt University lists online PhD and DBA fees for international students, and Torrens offers online professional doctorates. Always confirm the mode and your eligibility with the university.
