Table notes. Figures come from the official pages linked above, checked in October 2026. *UNC Greensboro's 30 credits assume at least 700 practicum hours from the master's program; students with fewer hours complete additional credits and hours. *Purdue Global lists 50 quarter credits on its program page and a 48–57 range in its brochure, depending on prior hours. *Toledo's catalog sets credits by track: 41 for the Clinical Practice Leadership track (for students who already hold 460 supervised clinical hours from their master's), 59 for Nurse Executive, and 73 to 74 for the family and psychiatric-mental health NP tracks. All seven programs list CCNE accreditation for the DNP. Availability varies by state.
Purdue Global states that residents of Hawaii, Louisiana, New York, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, Guam and the Virgin Islands may not enroll in its DNP program, and that international students are not eligible. Texas Woman's University asks out-of-state students to contact the DNP program director before applying to confirm the degree meets licensure requirements in their home state.
What Does a No Dissertation DNP Program Online Actually Involve?
As mentioned earlier, a no dissertation program online uses an applied DNP project rather than traditional dissertation. By dissertation we mean original research study meant to add new knowledge to a field, and it is a must requirement for most of the research PhD Programs including nursing. However, DNP uses a different model. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) describes the DNP as a terminal degree in nursing practice and as an alternative to research-focused doctoral programs. In AACN's framing, DNP-prepared nurses implement the science that PhD-prepared nurse researchers develop.
In Online DNP without dissertation pathway, you are required to complete a DNP Project. Different schools name this differently, such as scholarly projects or capstones, etc.
For example: A.T. Still University describes its online DNP as a terminal degree without the need for a dissertation and gives examples of projects such as a quality improvement concept, a practice of innovation or a policy change. Johns Hopkins builds the work into four project courses: problem discovery, project advancement, project application, and evaluation and dissemination. The University of Toledo uses a three-course sequence that moves from proposal to implementation to evaluation and dissemination.
Means if you are searching for a DNP with no dissertation online programs, we assume you are looking for a program whose final deliverable is applied project, supported by faculty chair and a practice mentor. So, here on the page we included the programs that match the above definition.
It is very important to note that No Dissertation does not mean no rigor. No Dissertation DNP online programs require a written project, faculty approval at each stage, a practice-site mentor, and a final presentation. Purdue Global, for example, requires IRB training and IRB approval before the scholarly project can begin, and its students work under a DNP consultant with a mentor at their practice site.
Can You Start a DNP Without Dissertation Online with Only a BSN?
If you are a nursing professional holding a BSN degree, there are still options for you to earn a DNP Online degree without dissertation through a BSN to No-Dissertation DNP online route. Although you have to complete master’s level course work and usually it has a longer completion time.
For example, The University of Toledo, for instance, lists its post-baccalaureate DNP tracks at roughly 69 to 74 credits, compared with 41 credits on its post-master's Clinical Practice Leadership track. If you are weighing a BSN-to-DNP route, compare total credits rather than the "no dissertation" label, since a project replaces the dissertation on both routes.
The 1,000-hour rule is the main reason prior experience matters. Programs generally require 1,000 post-baccalaureate practice hours in total and credit part of that from your master's program, which is why UNC Greensboro, Johns Hopkins, Texas Woman's University and the University of New Mexico each assess your prior hours before setting your DNP requirements. The University of New Mexico, for example, allows up to 500 master's hours to count toward the 1,000. Ask any program for a written gap analysis before you commit.
Which BSN to DNP Programs Online Have No Dissertation?
Almost all the BSN to DNP programs online do not require dissertation and end with a DNP project. Same as the MSN to DNP with no dissertation degree online route. The only major difference is the addition of master’s level course work and clinical hours requirement that extend the completion time of the program.
For your review and comparison, we added some of the accredited and verified BSN to DNP online programs without dissertation. The programs accept BSN degree holding nursing professionals and offer most of the coursework online and hold CCNE accreditation. Though Some require short on-campus visits.
- BSN-entry DNP programs also end with a DNP project, not a dissertation. The route is simply longer because master's-level coursework comes first.
- Among the programs below, credit totals run from 57 (UT Chattanooga) to 74 or more, compared with roughly 30 to 50 credits for the post-master's programs in the first table.
- Most BSN-entry programs still include short on-campus visits: immersions at the University of South Carolina, two 3-day intensives at UT Chattanooga, a campus project defense at Ohio State, and one clinical intensive in USAHS's FNP track.
- Check state availability before you apply. The University of Cincinnati, for example, cannot enroll residents of eight states.
| University | Entry and specialties | Credits | Delivery | Final requirement | Published cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Toledo | BSN to DNP (NP and leadership tracks) | About 69–74, varies by track | Online, asynchronous | DNP project (three-course sequence); 1,030–1,170 clinical hours | See the university's bursar |
| University of South Carolina | BSN to DNP: Nurse Executive Leadership, AGACNP, FNP, PMHNP | 73–74 (clinical); 74 (Nurse Executive) | Online classes with select on-campus immersions; full- or part-time | DNP final project; minimum 1,000 clinical hours | See the university's bursar |
| Ohio State University | BSN to DNP, multiple specialties (FNP, neonatal NP, nurse anesthesia, PMHNP and others) | 72 per online program page; curriculum page lists 79–92* | Online coursework; final project defended on campus; synchronous classes | Scholarly project in the final phase | $1,158.58 per credit, fees included (about $83,400 at 72 credits) |
| University of Cincinnati | BSN to DNP: NP tracks, Systems Leadership, Public Health, Occupational Health | Varies by track (not published on track pages)* | Online coursework plus in-person precepted clinical practice | DNP project | $836 per credit (Ohio resident) or $851 (non-resident), plus a $57 per-credit online fee |
| University of Tennessee at Chattanooga | BSN to DNP: Nursing Administration Systems | Minimum 57 | Online, with a virtual orientation and two 3-day on-campus intensives | Translational Project during a clinical residency; 1,000 clinical hours | Graduate tuition plus a nursing fee; use UTC's Fee Estimator |
| University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences | BSN-entry DNP: Nurse Executive, FNP, PMHNP | 64 / 71 / 77 | Online classes plus hands-on learning; 3.3–4 years | DNP project | $73,188 / $84,628 / $90,825 total direct expenses (Spring 2026) |
Table notes. *Ohio State's online program page and curriculum page list different credit totals, and Cincinnati's track pages do not publish one, so confirm with each program. All six programs list CCNE accreditation for the DNP; Cincinnati hosted a CCNE continuing-accreditation visit in February 2026, so confirm its current status in the CCNE directory. Costs are those each school publishes (2025–26 or 2026 terms) and change every year; USAHS totals include tuition, technology and graduation fees and books, and its BSN-entry grants of $15,000 (FNP, PMHNP) and $10,000 (Nurse Executive) are not deducted. University of South Carolina applicants for BSN entry must show 2,400 work hours within the past 24 months. Cincinnati cannot enroll residents of Arizona, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee or Washington State.
Every BSN-entry route replaces the dissertation with a project, so "no dissertation" does not separate these programs. credit totals run from 57 (UT Chattanooga) to 77 (USAHS PMHNP)" and how many clinical hours you must find yourself do.
What Does the DNP Project Involve From Start to Finish?
Although the every school has its own format, but the nursing schools we listed follows the same format almost:
- Choose a practice problem. Pick an issue in your workplace or community. A.T. Still University encourages students to find clinical sites in their own communities.
- Plan and propose. Work with a faculty chair and a practice mentor. Purdue Global students work under a DNP consultant with a mentor at their practice site, and Johns Hopkins requires a project plan proposal.
- Secure approvals. Many programs require ethics or IRB review. At Purdue Global, IRB approval is required before the scholarly project can be developed.
- Implement in practice. Put the evidence-based change into action at your practice site. These project hours count toward your practice-hour total.
- Evaluate outcomes. Measure what changed, using the data methods taught in your coursework.
- Disseminate. Write up the results and present them, as in Johns Hopkins' evaluation-and-dissemination course and Toledo's final project course.
Pick a project topic early. In the programs reviewed, the project runs across several terms or courses: three terms at Purdue Global, four project courses at Johns Hopkins and three at Toledo. A topic tied to a problem at your own workplace usually makes data access and permissions easier. Ask each program how topics are approved and who supervises.
How Long Do No Dissertation DNP Programs Online Take?
Please note that different nursing schools have different completion time for non-dissertation DNP programs online. UNC Greensboro lists 15 months full-time over four semesters, Purdue Global reports a 1.5-year average, A.T. Still University says two years or less, the University of New Mexico describes a two-year program, Johns Hopkins plans six semesters, and Texas Woman's University lists as few as eight semesters.
Those are minimum or typical full-time figures. Part-time study, a slower project or fewer transferable practice hours can add terms. UNC Greensboro, for instance, lists a six-semester part-time plan for its spring start, and both UNC Greensboro and Johns Hopkins set maximum completion windows of seven years and six years respectively.
If speed is your main filter, our guide to the fastest online DNP programs compares accelerated options on completion time alone. This page stays focused on how the dissertation requirement is handled.
How Much Do No Dissertation DNP Programs Online Cost?
Cost of a DNP no dissertation degree online programs depends on several factors like credits, immersion or colloquium travel and fees.
Cost for a DNP no dissertation online depends on credits, immersion or colloquium travel, and fees. Two of the programs above publish rates we could confirm. A.T. Still University's 2026–27 schedule lists DNP tuition of $924 per credit hour plus a $44 per-credit student technology fee. Across its 33 credit hours, that is about $30,492 in tuition, or about $31,944 with the technology fee. Purdue Global lists $700 per credit for its DNP. At the 50 quarter credits on its program page, tuition comes to about $35,000, and the 48–57 credit range in its brochure would put it between roughly $33,600 and $39,900.
How A.T. Still University bills. Tuition and fees are billed by the semester at the per-credit-hour rate and are due the first week of class. ATSU says rates are subject to change each academic year, and that delinquent tuition accrues penalties of 1.5 percent per month (18 percent per year). ATSU also offers an online tuition estimator for its online programs.
Those figures cover tuition and stated fees only. Budget separately for books, any on-site immersions or colloquia (Johns Hopkins and Texas Woman's University both include in-person components), background checks, liability insurance and travel. Employer tuition benefits, federal aid and scholarships can lower the net cost; see our guide to Fully and Partially Funded PhD and Doctorate Programs and For a ranked look at lower-priced options, see our guide to affordable nursing PhD and online DNP programs.
- The first thing is that you must check the institutional accreditation of the university itself. For example, by the Higher Learning Commission, which accredited Purdue Global.
- The Second and most important accreditation check is the program level accreditation. The commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) which accredits clinical doctorate programs.
Tuition changes every year. Treat any published rate as a starting point and ask admissions for a current cost sheet that lists every fee.
Are Online DNP Programs Without Dissertation Accredited and Respected?
Yes, Online DNP programs without dissertation are accredited and respected, as accreditation is the most important factor to check the credibility of any program. And there are two layers to check.
The DNP without dissertation online is now a well-established degree. AACN reports that more AACN reports that more than 108,000 nurses have graduated with a DNP, that 452 U.S. schools of nursing currently enroll DNP students, and that CCNE has accredited 387 DNP programs (figures from AACN’s DNP fact sheet, updated May 2026). AACN and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties have also advocated the DNP as the entry-level degree for nurse practitioners, though practice rules and certification requirements vary, so check them for your state and specialty.
- Look up the program in the CCNE accreditation listings or the ACEN program search.
- Confirm the university's institutional accreditor on its own accreditation page.
- Ask your state board of nursing and your certification body whether the program meets their requirements.
DNP or PhD in Nursing: Which Doctorate Fits a Path Without a Dissertation?
Both are doctorates, but they answer different career questions. The table compares them at a high level.
| Feature | DNP (project, no dissertation) | PhD in nursing (dissertation) |
|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Applying and translating evidence into practice, leadership and quality improvement | Producing new research knowledge |
| Final work | DNP project, implemented and evaluated in practice | Dissertation based on original research |
| Practice hours | At least 1,000 post-bachelor's practice hours expected nationally; master's hours may count | Research training is the core; practice hours are not the defining requirement |
| Typical roles | Advanced practice, executive and systems leadership, quality improvement, clinical faculty | Nurse scientist, researcher, academic faculty |
| Example | Texas Woman's University DNP | TWU also offers a PhD in Nursing Science |
Nurses who want both can look at bridge pathways; TWU, for instance, lists a DNP to PhD Bridge. For a cross-field view, see our guide to dissertation versus no dissertation doctorates.
What Should You Check Before Enrolling in a DNP Without Dissertation?
Program-level accreditation:
It is very important step to verify the program accreditation directly with CCNE or ACEN for the DNP program you are going to enroll as well the accreditation term for the program. For instance Johns Hopkins, states that its CCNE accreditation runs until 2028.
State authorization and licensure.
Another important thing to verify and confirm is that your state of residence is eligible for the program you are going to enroll in. as the Purdue Global and TWU notes above show.
Practice-hour credit
If you are going to enroll in MSN to DNP no Dissertation program online, you must confirm that how many of your master’s credits hours count and how many you need to add
Project support.
It is highly recommended that you must confirm the format and procedures of the program, like how topics are approved, who supervise and whether you need to find you own practice site and mentor.
In-person requirements.
None at A.T. Still University, on-site immersions at Johns Hopkins, an in-person colloquium at Texas Woman’s University, and two campus days at UNC Greensboro (orientation and graduation) that are encouraged rather than required.
Total cost and time limits
To avoid any surprises and unexpected burden on your budget you must confirm in advance about every fee and additional expenses you have to pay the maximum time as well allowed to finish your degree program.
Be cautious of any program that promises a guaranteed finish date, hides its practice-hour requirement or cannot name its program accreditor.
Can International Nurses Enroll in Online DNP Programs Without Dissertation?
Yes, they can, However for International students, the enrollment lot depends on the program, as DNP is specifically U.S. based degree title and enrollment rules for international students differ as per college and program.
- Purdue Global states that international students are not eligible for its DNP.
- UNC Greensboro accepts international applicants whose RN credentials are validated by CGFNS, or who are approved to practice as a registered nurse in their home country; it also requires a master's degree in nursing plus clinical experience in an advanced nursing role, and non-resident international students take part in a telephone interview.
- Texas Woman's University requires international transcripts to be evaluated by a NACES or AICE member service.
Outside the United States, equivalent qualifications are usually called professional doctorates and are often research-based. Oxford Brookes University’s Professional Doctorate in Nursing, for instance, is a part-time doctoral programme that develops research skills and involves research into your area of practice, so it is not a direct counterpart of a U.S. no-dissertation DNP. For country-specific options, browse our online doctorate guides by country.
What Careers Can a DNP Without a Dissertation Lead To?
A DNP prepares nurses for advanced practice, executive and systems leadership, quality improvement and clinical teaching roles. A.T. Still University lists chief nursing officer, healthcare system leader and university administrator or faculty member among possible career paths. For market context, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives and nurse practitioners earned a median of $132,050 in May 2024 and projects 35 percent employment growth from 2024 to 2034.
That figure covers advanced practice roles as a group, and a DNP is not the only route into them, so treat it as market context rather than a salary promise for DNP graduates.

Frequently Asked Questions :
Are online DNP programs without dissertation credible?
Yes, when the program is accredited. Check CCNE or ACEN accreditation for the DNP itself and confirm the university’s institutional accreditation. All seven programs in this guide state CCNE accreditation for their DNP. The format is also the national norm: AACN defines the DNP as a practice doctorate, and the DNP project takes the place of a dissertation.
Will I still have to do research?
You will not conduct original dissertation research, but you will work with research. A DNP project applies published evidence, collects and analyzes outcome data, and is written up and presented. Expect coursework in evidence-based practice and biostatistics or data analysis, and possible IRB review.
Can I finish a DNP without a dissertation in under three years?
Often, if you already hold a master’s degree and can credit prior practice hours. UNC Greensboro lists 15 months full-time, A.T. Still University two years or less and Purdue Global a 1.5-year average. Part-time schedules and project delays can extend that. See our fastest online DNP programs guide for a speed-focused comparison.
Is the DNP a terminal degree?
Yes. AACN describes the DNP as a terminal degree in nursing practice. Research-focused doctorates such as the PhD in nursing are the alternative for nurses who want to build a research career.
Do I need a master's degree before starting a DNP?
For the programs listed here, yes. BSN-to-DNP routes exist at some schools, such as the University of Toledo’s post-baccalaureate DNP tracks at roughly 69 to 74 credits, but they take longer because they include master’s-level work. Purdue Global routes BSN-prepared applicants through its MSN–DNP Path first.
Can I complete my DNP project at my own workplace?
Often, yes. A.T. Still University encourages students to complete practicum hours in their own communities, and Purdue Global lets students complete practice experiences and the project at a practice setting of their choice. Your site still has to meet the school’s supervision and approval rules.
Can I study part-time?
Several programs allow it. UNC Greensboro’s spring start is a six-semester part-time plan, and the University of Toledo lists full- and part-time options. Purdue Global notes that its completion estimates assume full-time study.
Are these the easiest DNP programs online?
“Easy” is the wrong test. A DNP without a dissertation is still a doctorate with 1,000 practice hours, a supervised project and a final presentation. A better test is fit: accreditation, state availability, how prior hours transfer and how much support you get with the project.
